The idea is to take these characters that we all know collectively and try to find things about them that we haven't explored before. Sometimes it's a story point, sometimes it's a thematic connection, sometimes it's a dilemma they face in both worlds that is similar. We are not generally retelling the exact same story as the fairy tale world. There's the threat of her knowing she's an evil queen and then there's just the pure simple fact that the biological mother has stepped into her world and the threat of losing her son is just enormous.
That's a fear that I think any adopted mother would have. I think that's going to really help the audience relate to Regina in some level. This article needs additional citations for verification. Not so good than first graphic novel. These stories were more like just little snippets in between and didnt have a lot of new to their whole stories. But loved Jeffersons story as it was significant one. I will also do a video review here at my channel: This graphic novel, as well as the other one, "Shadow of the Queen," are definitely made for die-hard fans.
And if you can't tell from the cover and the synopsis, this graphic novel tells additional stories from some of the show's post popular characters. Just like with "Shadow of the Queen," I immensely enjoyed this and it was just fun to see new stories for these characters. It helps that one of the writers of this graphic novel, Kalinda Vazquez, is also a co-executive producer for the TV series, so basically all of these stories are things that could have been in the show, but were cut for whatever reason either due to lack of time and lack of placement within the current stories, or just because certain actors couldn't come back, like Sebastian Stan who played Jefferson , so you can look at these stories as unseen canon.
To talk about the layout of the graphic novel in general: I mean, there's only so much that can be placed on any given page, so for the most part, much of it is a tad bit rushed, whereas on the TV series, things would have been developed gradually and not so quickly. But alas, that is the nature of graphic novels. You get thrown right into things, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. For the most part, the writing felt very much like what you'd hear on the show. As for artwork, I had some similar issues like I did with "Shadow of the Queen. I would have preferred just one artist for the whole book.
But in general, the artwork is fine, the characters look like the characters which is important. If I had to list my favorite stories in this book, they'd go as follows: We finally get the origin story of Jefferson, and find out who the mother of Grace is. Had quite a sad ending. Leaves you wondering what was real and what wasn't. We all love Hook, so more Hook is always great. Nice to see someone from Belle's past have an impact, plus a familiar magical item makes an appearance.
Just more of Regina determined to find Snow White and someone who knew Daniel is chasing after her to avenge Daniel. Overall, loved this graphic novel, so fun, and Jefferson's story is definitely worth the price alone. If you are a fan of the show, this book is a must. Jan 23, Moriah Venable rated it it was amazing Shelves: I loved the first graphic novel. While I didn't like the different art styles, which eventually grew on me I have to admit I loved the stories.
In the first one we see Killian before he became Hook, on the Jolly Rogers in a bad storm. He goes to another world, which is said to have made people go crazy. After getting there, he sees his brother, while his crew fee As a fan of Once Upon A Time though I do need to watch season four, I was excited when I heard they were making another graphic novel.
After getting there, he sees his brother, while his crew feels its just an illusion of the island or better yet the creature that lives there to keep them there, Killian is happy to see his brother and alive again. Overwhelmed that his brother is not gone after all. While trying to escape, Liam Killian's brother gets trapped by the monster and begs Killian to come back for him.
Because it is there only opportunity, Killian escapes and leaves to wonder if that was really his brother or not. Which I felt quite sad about. Cause it is possible that his brother hadn't died, and he had just lost him again. In the next story, we see Belle and Rumble, where Rumple is still a servant to the Dark One but you can of course see tender moments between them however small.
While going to town one day, Belle sees someone she knows who is hurt and runs back to the castle to convince the Dark One to help.
While he doesn't help, he does allow the man to stay to see if he will heal. Belle asks him questions which he can't seem to remember. Is this a joyous reunion among friends or does Belle and Rumple have something to fear with this newcomer. The third story features the Evil Queen is hot pursuit of Snow White when she sees a mysterious stranger hidden in a cloak.
From what she can see, the person looks like her beloved Daniel who is actually his brother, looking to avenge his brother. Although she tries to tell her it was Snow White, though it was really her mother. Snow White didn't tear out his heart. The last story was just as heart clenching as the first story. In this we meet the Mad Hatter. A thief looking for a rare watch. He goes in search of it, only to find a woman has beaten him to the spot where its suppose to flee.
The two run from the guards and eventually fall in love and start a family. Hatter puts away his world jumping hat. But years later, the family is out of money and Hatter gets a letter from a friend telling that the watch is in Wonderland.
Against his wife's wishes, he goes. What was suppose to a simple and easy mission, causes the Hatter to lose much more than he was ever ready to lose. I really hope that we get another graphic novel, cause I really love them. Oct 06, Wisty rated it really liked it. A nice, quick with that provided some cool background on some of the best characters. Also, the illustrations were beautiful! But I want him back on the show! This was so terrible. The art besides Belle's story; which was a great watercolour looked like a child had done it. The stories had barely anything to do with the real plot lines of the show.
The hatters story was the only one that highlighted a bit of the back story going on before what we learn of in the show. This was also more of mini comics than a graphic novel. Nov 23, Holli rated it did not like it. This is the worst graphic novel. It looks like a 3 yr old drew it. I could go on a series rant about how terrible it is and why it was even published. The publisher should personally apologize to anyone who tried to read it.
Feb 23, Lauren marked it as to-read. Oct 17, Lilian added it.

I just finished this quick read! While the drawings were nice, I wasn't a fan of some of the stories. They were a little boring, except for The Mad Hatter's story. He's my favorite character from the show and his book makes me love him even more. Loved Jefferson's back story along with Captain hook back story. Rumple and Belle's was okay although not for the faint of heart and the Back story of Regina was not as compelling as advertised. The Rumple and Belle story was the best!! Once Upon a Time: Out of The Past is filled with four short stories. The story was alright.

For Emma Swan, life has been anything but a happy ending. But when she's reunited with Henry - the son she gave up for adoption ten years ago - on the night of her 28th birthday, everything changes. The now year-old Henry is in desperate need of Emma's help because he believes from reading a book of fairy-tales that she's the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming - who sent her away from the Enchanted Forest to be protected from a curse that was enacted by the Evil Queen.
Emma initially refuses to believe a word of Henry's story but soon finds that his hometown of Storybrooke, Maine is more than it seems. Because it's in Storybrooke that all of the classic characters we know are frozen in time with no memories of their former selves - except for the Evil Queen, who is Storybrooke's mayor and Henry's adoptive mother Regina Mills.
Now, as the epic "Final Battle" for the future of both worlds approaches, Emma will have to accept her destiny and uncover the mystery behind a place I really enjoyed the pilot episode. It was refreshing to view a show that was not another reality series or "dare" show.
This series brilliant mixture of classic fairy tales that adults have grown so familiar with and blended it with creative story lines. The acting was well done and the special effects were as well. Without giving too much away it's worth investing the hour to view! Older children may even enjoy watching the series.
