Driving the stagecoach to Fort Stockton without a shotgun messenger is keeping John Slocum on his toes. Slocum had just ridden into Diamond City, but with hardly a chance to clean his whistle, a man approaches him with a job. Just before the Rockies, they are attacked by a group of otherworldly creatures that rise out of the ground and can disappear into thin air.
The creatures are led by Spirit Bear, who has sworn to kill anyone who crosses his land. In order to get the wagon train to safety, Slocum has to hunt down Spirit Bear, his most unearthly foe yet Slocum goes up against a gang of gold-crazed killers! It was too dark to see, but the sounds of gunfire and agony were unmistakable. Slocum has never crossed the line to become a gun for hire.
Fortunately for the three travelers, John Slocum happens to be passing by, on his way to deliver some horses. After the braves are gone, Slocum learns that the wagoner and his precious cargo are headed for the same town: When the Apaches return in the night, Slocum is ready for them. Obadiah recognizes one of their attackers—a man who works for Mordecai Wisner, the same man who hired Slocum to transport the horses. Slocum learns that trouble is all in the family. At least he has some female company to keep him warm.
Luckily, Slocum has a job at the sawmill that will do just fine. Chasing down the jewel thief seems like a simple tracking job.
