Pierce Lawrence is an ex-SEAL, returned from the middle east, and entrusted with the care of his 5 year old daughter, Jaci, while her mother and new husband set up a new business venture in Cuba. He heads to the Kavanaugh ranch, where he and his brothers were taken in after their parents died. There he meets the mysterious Grace Addison, who has wound up at the ranch by chance, after helping owner Esther Kavanaugh after a fall. Grace is running from a deadly past. She fears she'll put this famil Pierce Lawrence is an ex-SEAL, returned from the middle east, and entrusted with the care of his 5 year old daughter, Jaci, while her mother and new husband set up a new business venture in Cuba.
She fears she'll put this family at risk if she hangs around for too long. Much more leisurely paced than your typical Intrigue entry, but I actually quite enjoyed it. I sometimes get tired of all the Intrigue books with secret spy agencies, where there about 10 team members running about who you can't tell apart. This one took the time to set up its premise. There's a mystery regarding the death of Charlie Kavanaugh, Esther's husband, but that would appear to be something that will be resolved over books to come.
Refreshingly, it didn't stunt my enjoyment of this one, rather it made me look forward to reading the others! Joanna Wayne is a pro in this genre, and there is a definite undercurrent of suspense to the proceedings as we wait to find out exactly what it is Grace is running from.
Most importantly, I quite liked the characters here, Pierce in particular. This is the sort of hero I enjoy reading about! He knows Grace is being cagey, but he doesn't instantly jump to the absolute worst scenarios and accuse her of horrible things, the way so many "heroes" in this genre do. Rather, he acts like a patient, level-headed man and works on getting Grace to trust him enough to tell him the truth. Who would have thought?
Jaci is a precocious child, but wasn't annoying. Esther was both tough and warm. They were supporting characters that I cared about. The plot isn't complex or fast-paced enough to make this a four star story, but it's close. It has sympathetic characters, builds slowly but surely to an effective climax, and is a welcome change of pace from the typical Intrigue spy agency story with too many ancillary characters. This is my first book by Joanna Wayne and I am eager to read more by her.
The story of a recently retired SEAL, Pierce Lawrence, and his efforts to bond with his 5 year old daughter on the Texas ranch he spent 10 months on as a child is complicated by the appearance on the ranch of a woman, Grace Addison, who is on the run from a terrible past that she holds secret from everyone. The book is excellent with an exciting storyline and very likable leading characters. I will definitely be looking fo This is my first book by Joanna Wayne and I am eager to read more by her.
I will definitely be looking forward to book 2 of the series when it is released in a little over a week. May 13, Jess Lawson rated it liked it. I felt this book left a lot to be desired in the action department. It wasn't your typical intrigue book. It had small event's but lacked the fast paced intrigue I was looking for. The chemistry between Pierce and Grace was great. Even though they really didn't have a lot to base a relationship on with them barely knowing each other and so many lies and mistrust.
I still enjoyed the read it had a great flow to it. I just had some personal issues with some of the scenes and not finding them to be believable. Oct 13, Eve Devon rated it really liked it. Perhaps I was in the mood for a pacier and more action-driven read, but this was a great start to a new series and definitely had more of a heart-warming feel to it, which is no bad thing!
Jaci in my head, of course , is the cutest little girl! I'm really learning to love these kind of romance books. Quick, easy read and an awesome book. I normally enjoy Joanna Wayne's books and this is no exception. The characters are fantastic and the storyline is perfect too. I can't say enough good things about this book.
Couldn't put it down.. Great A fast paced, wonderful story.
A whole lot of action and thrills. Has you sitting on the edge of your seat, from the beginning to the end. Remaly rated it it was amazing Jan 22, Meli Mcd rated it it was amazing Jan 03, Emily Grace rated it really liked it Aug 20, I was gonna get raped five minutes away from my high school, on the side of a busy street, while everyone looked the other way and nobody cared.
I reflexively hugged my arms and wished my legs would run, but I was doing everything I could just to keep myself from hyperventilating. His eyes turned black. There were no whites, no irises, no pupils, just black. Completely opaque and a deep pit, all at the same time. His mouth opened, impossibly wide, and the last thing I saw before I blacked out was thick black smoke pouring out of his nose and mouth.
Before we moved to Katy, I'd lived in Richardson, Texas. Yet another suburb, this one of Dallas, not Houston. I was shunned by the other kids, and who could blame them, really? They wore jeans and miniskirts. They went to the mall. They listened to loud music about sex and fumbled with each other's most private parts under the bleachers. I wore dresses that covered everything to my wrists, knees, and neck, and wasn't allowed to cut my hair. When I went out, it was to the church my parents made me go to. I didn't hold iPods.
I held the Bible my parents made me carry all the time. My one tiny piece of freedom came at night; while my parents slept, I snuck out of my well-oiled bedroom window and headed behind the subdivision we lived in. Sandwiched between my subdivision and another one, there was a stream, about five feet wide.
Grass grew on either side, and a weeping willow bent its beautiful head next to it. If you ignored the granite sewer tunnel that the stream disappeared into, it was a piece of heaven. A wild, untamed, free-growing piece of Utopia, where nobody bothered me. No insults, no jokes from cruel kids. No parents watching me with eagle eyes and calling out every time I "sinned", no speeches about the lake of fire I was surely headed to. Just me, the soft tinkle of water over stone, and the wind through the branches of the willow tree. I could have stayed there forever.
The businessman was there, adding to the confusion, leaning against the trunk of the tree. Most people just kind of have this Some dark room they wake up in, not this. It's nice," he said, gesturing to the tree and the moon overhead. He grinned and put hind hands in his pockets. I needed a new body.
Old one was wearing out and getting a bit recognizable. And you're about perfect, darlin'. No hitting me, no demands, no attempt to knee me in the jewels?
Grace is running from a deadly past. And just like in the previous installations, the secrets and lies continue. More typos that I like but I really enjoyed the book. Most people just kind of have this The main characters of the past grasped time travel all too easily, when they would have likely cried witch.
You don't even want to know why I called you perfect? Well, enjoy the ride, kid.
I can't say how long you'll last. Dean turned slowly and stared into Sam's eyes, slightly hitching up one eyebrow. I mean, seriously, Sam. I have to put up with you all the time, might as well give me a challenge. He adjusted his tie and sighed. Don't feel like I can breathe. The home was like every other one whose door they'd banged on — someone's slightly dirty version of the white picket fence dream.
A tired-looking woman answered the door, just like every other house. This is the American Dream, thought Dean; you start with the idea that you're going to be the next big star or write the next great novel, and you end up tired, with too much padding around the middle and too many "playdates". The word made Dean think of these two blonde chicks who he got to dress in schoolgirl uniforms -. Sam elbowed him in the ribs. We're from the FBI," he said, flashing the old fake license in his pocket. Sam handed the woman a tissue. I'll just take it all with a grain of salt. Thank you for the helpful review.
The more that you read, The more things you will know. The more that you learn, The more places you'll go. TrumpCare by John Geyman, M. Beautiful write-up, the writer brought out a point, murderes and their supporter knows no peace irrespective of their hideout their sins will find them out. This book not only sounds like a history lesson, but also very entertaining historical fiction. This is not an era I normally read in the genre, but I am thoroughly intrigued by this story after reading the synopsis on Amazon, and now reading your review. It simply sounds like a must-read!
Thanks for your interesting review! Fine old Christmas, with the snowy hair and ruddy face, had done his duty that year in the noblest fashion, and had set off his rich gifts of warmth and color with all the heightening contrast of frost and snow. Riding shotgun on the normal stage. A well written historical fiction that tells three stories in one tale?
With poker gambling and old west confrontations and cheat kills? Count me in on this one. I was drawn to this book because of the authentic historical details on questions of race, sexuality and killing in the old west. I discovered the author's style captured the essence of the tough life at the time. I am anxious to read more about Isidro, the Tarahamura Indian, and the way his story interwines with that of the poker player Clarence and the Kilgory brothers. Thanks for an interesting review!
RVN by Tim Gingras. This well-written historical fiction novel seems to have an intriguing plotline and fascinating characters. I love reading historical fiction books. The Tears of Gethsemane by Deborah Faulks. Wow, what a beautiful story line. It sounds like an exciting book to read. Thanks for the interesting review.
