The description of the Battle of Milne Bay is the best I have read despite supposedly being focused on a single battalion.
Although the book generally steers clear of explicit critical analysis of politicians and generals there is some very brief description of the post war debate over the offensive strategy on Bougainville pursued by the Australian take over. And the description of the fighting and the ability of the Japanese to resist the Australians was an eye opener.
The Japanese as described in the book may have been cut off but they were not necessarily starving or lacking ability or will to fight on. One person found this helpful.
