I have been in the habit of listening to Handel's Messiah during Lent as my review of the relevant Scriptures. This year I decided to purchase this English version of the Passion for that purpose.
I am just blown away by the beauty of the work, and since I listen to it in my car while commuting through large gorgeous swaths of God's country AKA Colorado , it was important to me that it be in a language I could understand. I confess that I still needed to sneak peaks at the libretto included during choruses, but the soloists' diction typically required no glances at the cheat sheet.
Bernstein's program notes are very helpful. One error to watch out for--in my copy, Disk 1 is labeled 2, and 2 is labeled 1. One person found this helpful. This was sung in English, rather than the original German. For me, the cadence of the English translation didn't match the music as well as the original version.
This recording captures the energy and passion of this work, and it ranks in the top-tier of the different recordings that I have. However, it is no match for the majesty and spiritual quality of the Klemperer version: Bernstein and the NY Phil do a wonderful job, but potential buyers need to know 1 this is an English translation and 2 it is abridged not at all clear from the product description.
Also, at least in the copy I received, the discs were mislabeled: Disc 1 was actually Disc 2, and vice versa. I've waited 20 years to find this re-release of a 60's recording that I'd worn out 2 sets of LPs playing. In my view this is one of Bernstein's finest- every tempo, every dynamic, every nuance flows from his soul to his baton and to the orchestra, chorus, and soloists. Certainly not for the purists given the cuts and modern orchestral treatment, but for pure listening bliss this is the recording to own.

His all too brief explanation of this work at the end exposes his emotional involvement with this masterful music and is a delightful bonus that was originally included as a 7" LP in the set. Bravo to Sony for their Bernstein re-release program!
Bach captures the Passion of Jesus Christ in a masterful way. Leonard Bernstein interprets the piece in unique way that appealed to me as a American Christian. The recorded sound is somewhat dated. The music and singing are wonderful. I do find the cover to be rather irreverent. Usually one would expect a religious painting of some sort. Oh well, it is very much worth it to get this sung in English, and as a Christian I find the Bible text parts especially satisfying. Chorale "O Blessed Jesus".
