Having never heard of this movie before, I found it to be a pleasant surprise when I found it on youtube.
From reading the other reviews, it appears I'm in the minority, but I can't help it. In most cases, a film either has me after a few minutes, or it doesn't. From the start, I found Gene Tierney to be enchanting and, as the plot unfolded, I thought, "Ooh, this going to be fun. People have compared this to "The Lady Eve", but that has a plot even more preposterous.
I mean, come one, only someone with brain damage wouldn't know Eve and Jean are the same person. So, John thinking he had discovered a method for gambling doesn't seem that far-fetched. Though not one of the best film comedies of all time, it was still enjoyable. Visit Prime Video to explore more titles. Not one of their classic pieces, but a very fun and harmless time-waster. A surprising gem of a screwball comedy, with a pre-fatale Gene Tierney in her gorgeous prime 21 being sweet and funny and totally charming. The dark side of those charms is detected by the con artists who seduce her into their game, but we are still two years from the deadly Laura and three from the malevolent Ellen Berent.
But Henry Fonda and Gene Tierney are absolutely delightful together so if you're an aficionado of either they make it fairly easy to like this one all the same. Also, Laird Cregar never ceases to amaze me! He proves his elasticity as an actor making a wonderfully comic conman. What can't he do?
Rings on Her Fingers. Studio 20th Century Fox. I wouldn't normally associate…. Gene could really do it all.
