First, Ezra was hardly even a character, but more of a way to give Ruth some purpose this season. By the end of the episode, Campbell regrets ever making Snow his marshall, then gives Cullen the job, even though he still wants his main priority to be the railroad. Thor Gunderson, aka The Swede.
It seems like his strange time with Brigham Young is coming to an end, as he plans on going to work for the Central Pacific. No matter how many Sydneys and Campbells this show throws at us, the true villain of Hell on Wheels has and always will be The Swede. So far this season has been about the unity of Cheyenne as a community.
Through pain, loss and new leadership, Cheyenne has grown more powerful and stronger as a group. Even when outside forces threaten to tear up their town, mutual hatred brings them altogether. As the show takes a hiatus before the final few episodes of the fourth season, the show seems to know where its flaws are and is attacking them accordingly, while making its characters stronger, its stories more compelling and creating a stronger ensemble in the process. When he confronted Campbell and held his gun to the Guvs head you could see the fear in Campbells eyes. That was not the passion of a woman overly concerned with her reputation. The Swede beams and says the Holy Spirit compelled him to reach out to Huntington, but Young interrupts him with a blow to the jaw. The Swede apologizes for being "bested by my pride," and Young tells him, "Heavenly Father has plans for you here.
Louise knocks on Eva's door. She reveals she was also raped by the Irish worker Eva murdered, but despite that, could never bring herself to do what Eva did. You'll see," Eva responds. Cullen finishes burying Ezra. Ruth turns to him and says fiercely, "When you find the devil who did this to my child, I hope you return him to hell with my wish that his suffering be deep and eternal. Durant gives Cullen the railroad marshal badge, warning him not to let his new duties prevent him from conquering Sherman's Peak.
Dressing after their latest tryst, Louise tells Campbell she's writing an article about the administration of justice in Cheyenne, and that she doesn't think he's going to like it. Cullen presents himself and tells Sidney he should have stayed away. Sidney agrees, but says it was unfinished business with Cullen that brought him back.
As Cullen starts to walk towards Sidney, a shot rings out. Sidney, hit in the leg, stumbles. A second shot hits him in the gut. Bewildered, Sidney looks at the porch of the Palmer Hotel and sees Ruth, smoking gun in hand.
Cullen, Durant and Campbell come together in order to discuss a means by which to provide protection to the citizens of Cheyenne. They must return a sense of. A little fire and brimstone make for one of the best Hell on Wheels episodes of the season. This Hell on Wheels review contains some spoilers. In the fictional world of Hell on Wheels, Cheyenne seems claustrophobic because it has yet to expand beyond three miles in any direction.
