Lists with This Book. Jul 30, Jenny Schwartz rated it it was amazing Shelves: Interesting heroine with a clear voice. There's charm and immediacy in the first person narrative with life wisdom woven through the story. The setting Sydney is beautifully brought alive. The cast of characters have distinct personalities and there's sense of lives flowing on, intersecting, changing.
Perhaps an echo of the transient nature of many Australian coastal communities. Distinctly Australian and definitely engaging. View all 3 comments. Jun 23, Caitlin rated it it was amazing. What a great fun read. Totally engaging believable charachters that keep you interested the whole way through. The romance is so well written that you can join in on those pre-date butterflies and hang out for that first lingering kiss. Great to have a novel with a real Sydney setting Jan 25, Cheryl Collier rated it liked it Shelves: Fun, quick read with a funny, insecure heroine and an almost too good to be true hero.
I hadn't read Australian chick-lit before this but can see the attraction to it for enjoyable relaxing reads. Nov 14, Kelly rated it liked it. This was a light hearted fun read. Editorial Reviews. From the Author. I hope you enjoy reading Mr Right and Other Mongrels as much as I enjoyed writing it. I set out to write a book that. Mr Right and Other Mongrels [Ms Monique McDonell, Ms Lisa Kelly] on Amazon. com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Blissfully happy in her own universe.
The owner of the truck and Ally's rescuer is none other than the national celebrity, Teddy Green. Ally doesn't know who Teddy is, she had gotten rid of her television years ago when her life began to revolve around her favorite shows.
Teddy likes that Ally is unpretentious and not all into his celebrity status, he finds it refreshing. A mutual attraction takes place between Ally and Teddy, but Louisa Lane, Teddy's jealous ex-girlfriend is determined to nix this budding romance and get back together with him.
What happens next is a whirlwind romance in a span of a month, and Ally questions why Teddy chose her and how she could fit into his world, while he sets out to show her that he is her Mr. Right and Other Mongrels is an entertaining, flirty and lighthearted romance story. Written in the first person narrative, Ally Johnson takes the reader on a fun ride as she tells her story about her unconventional life, dog phobia and finding Mr. Rich in detail and vivid descriptions, the story takes place in the picturesque coastline of Sydney, Australia.
I was sold on the wonderful description of Ally's bookstore, I love vintage secondhand bookstores, the eclectic mix of books and furnishings provides a warm and inviting environment. The author has created a quirky cast of characters that the reader can relate to, and they are just plain fun to get to know. I found the author's writing style to be interesting as she utilizes the local dialect of Australians into the dialogue. As an American not used to the Australian dialect, I found myself thoroughly entertained by the difference in the dialogue. The author weaves a fun tale about the quirky and sometimes tricky dynamics of unconventional families, individuality, insecurities, relationships and dog phobias.
I really enjoyed the humorous tone of the story, it made the story an easy and enjoyable read. I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by CBLS Promotions. Real laughs that later turned into smiles and it started on the very first page: First of all there is something you need to know about me. Dogs and I do not get along. In theory, I love them. In reality I have a full-blown hysterical dog phobia. I know how dog people are. They simply d Originally posted on Breath of Life Reviews This story made me laugh with its silliness, and crazy characters. This is so totally true! It's like she's calling me out personally! And while I don't have a dog phobia, I can understand her when she says that these situations seem to target her specifically.
I've been there, done that but had to rescue myself. Right and Other Mongrels is a fun story, it's not a romance novel and there are really ridiculous moments in it that can have you rolling your eyes in annoyance, particularly at the nosiness of Allegra's friends and family. It's fluffy and uncomplicated and never pretends to be anything other than that which is appreciated because if there's one thing I hate is a misleading book blurb!
While walking down the street, Ally encounters an over-excited Old English Sheepdog, and because she has a serious dog phobia, she goes into a full blown panic attack and jumps into the bed of a truck to get away from the dog. But in this case, the quirky girl owns a bookshop and the hot guy is a TV celebrity. She's seen a lot of really bizarre things in her life, including her mother having sex with her last boyfriend. The romance is so well written that you can join in on those pre-date butterflies and hang out for that first lingering kiss.
The names of some of the characters took some getting used to as well but with some of them being "hippies" or children of "hippies" it's more believable than it should be. The characters are relatable, if a bit exaggerated and dramatic at times.
They're amusing, annoying, and funny all at once. Since the story takes place in Australia, I did have to look up a few terms that I wasn't familiar with but really, it doesn't deter from the overall story, I'm just nosy that way. I have to know what the characters are referring to, what their home town looks like, etc. Right and Other Mongrels is not for everyone.
Having said that I know my brain would be just as active wherever I was and the benefits so outweigh the negatives for me. Thanks so much for stopping by and giving me this opportunity to badger you with some of my questions. To begin, tell us about a favorite character from a book. My favourite character from a book is Jo March from Little Women. I connected with her as a child — I too had red hair and a strong personality. I felt like I tried hard and wanted to do things the right way always got it just a little bit wrong, just like Jo.
Does travel play in the writing of your books? Travel does play a bit in the writing of my books. My most recent release Hearts Afire has the characters head off to a tropical island on the edge of the Barrier Reef. I have been to a couple of islands like that and drew form my travels there quite heavily for that section in the book. A the same way. If you were to write a series of novels, what would it be about? This is a great question I have a series of YA chicklit books set on an island principality the Mediterranean. I have it mapped out I just need to find the time to write. I can see the island and houses and people.
Have you attended a high school reunion? What did you learn? I have attended a High School reunion, two actually, and funny you should ask because I have one this coming Saturday. The first one I loved because I was one of those kids who caught the train to school with one group, was in different activities with different kids. It was lovely to see people who had maybe had a tough time at school so happy and successful.
I always felt a bit awkward and odd but others remember me as confident and outgoing so I guess I was a better actress than I gave myself credit for. What are the most important attributes for remaining sane as a writer?
