I waited several years for the next book in this series to come out and this is the result.
WEB Griffin's name may be on the book jacket, but his son wrote this book. The writing is not crisp, the character interaction is almost non-existent, the politics and dialogue inside and outside of the department has vanished, as have several central characters. Has anyone seen Peter Wohl, Amy Payne, and others? One of the best things abo What in the world happened to this series. One of the best things about this series was watching an investigation develop and follow it to its conclusion with all the politics, egos, tragedy, luck and solid police work.
This book had none of those things except luck and Matt Payne and the Texas Ranger charging in to the rescue.
Very disappointing and the crime here is a once great series has been diluted and ruined. A better title would have been The Last Book. Griffin please write the next book and fix this. Sep 21, Bill rated it really liked it Shelves: Typical in the style of WEB Griffin.
Too much repetition of history and description of characters previous used in prior novels within the series. I shoot right through the garbage but it still annoys me. As does his inclination to speak in technical terms of nomenclature of weapons. The story line has continued strong with the same characters which keeps my interest however ability of the good guys to beat the bad guys, especially Matt Payne has gotten to the limits of realism. Oh, this is a novel??? So I know of what I speak. As interesting as the stories are they just begin to rub my inner nature of knowing from experience.
But so did Tom Clancey until I stopped reading him. View all 4 comments. The book is also well padded with excerpts from past books in this series which removed would make this plot line a very short story. Matt Payne and team are after a Russian and Porto Rican drug cartel selling drugs and women in Philly.

I have followed W. Griffin for years and hate to see the decline in story telling compared to his older books. But I will keep on listening to his books as he produces them, even at his worse he is better than a lot of other writers. Feb 10, Byron Lord rated it liked it.
While I love how he builds the setting and the plots, I felt like the book ended abruptly and with too many plots unresolved. This is a revealing look in to the evil and moral bankruptcy of the drug and slave trade. We see how little value is placed on life and how far these master criminals will go to reach their end.
Aug 29, John Browning rated it really liked it. Great read fun, engaging and relaxing. Aug 01, George rated it it was ok Shelves: This was intended to be a revealing look in to the evil and moral bankruptcy of the drug and slave trade. Matt Payne, the main protagonist, just seems to be more of a background character here. Typical Griffin and Butterworth story. Over pages of developing a complex story and 3 pages to resolve it This book has more violence, or maybe gross dead bodies are more appropriate term, than the majority of Griffin books.
The book ended abruptly and with too many plots unresolved. Whether I'll go on This was intended to be a revealing look in to the evil and moral bankruptcy of the drug and slave trade. Whether I'll go on to 12 in the series is in doubt. Jan 01, Susan B rated it really liked it.
Matt Payne a well off cop in homicide is labeled the Marshall after Wyatt Earp type crime solving. The last witness is socialite Maggie McCain who takes it upon herself to try and find out about the disappearance of several girls from the halfway houses. Sep 23, William Howle rated it liked it. This book started well and ended well, but there seems to bog down in the middle of the book with too much inane dialogue and an over abundance of texting that makes the story drag.
The earlier books that I read many years ago moved along well. Recent books seem to drag, but I would give it one more try. By the numbers Bland, predictable this installment of this series failed to get my heart or my head interested. There were some despicable scenes, i.
Mexican stew, but it read more clinical than horrific. Aug 31, Tony rated it liked it. But I would not recommend it. Apr 13, Kevin Kazokas rated it it was ok. This book fell well short of the bar for W.
The fictional police-procedural, based in Philadelphia and part of the author's Badge of Honor series, contained many of his familiar elements -- his exquisite and unique attention to detail, his layered plot entanglements, and his richly mined characterizations. However, the book, coauthored by W. Often, the people were thinking the obvious, and their inner observations added nothing to the story nor their personal development.
A truly aggravating technique. Beyond that, the writing felt confusing and in need of an editor's touch, particularly involving the usage of pronouns and the writers' overuse of the dreaded dash. I had to re-read parts, sometimes up to a half-page or so at a time, to grasp the intended meaning amid all the non sequiturs. The ending felt abrupt and unsatisfying with several of the key players dead. Others' fates went unexplained. Perhaps those ominous power-wielders will resurface in the next series installment, ready to further their evil enterprise across all social classes and entrapments of the city.
I previously read a Badge of Honor novel, perhaps the first one, and found it engrossing. By contrast, I had a hard time staying with this one, and felt relieved after pushing toward the finish, despite the ending's incomplete feel.
I remember main characters in previous solo-authored Griffin reads as much more endearing. But here, the novel's namesake, "The Last Witness," Maggie McCain, who was a social service caseworker innocently caught between victims and their deadly pursuers, hardly came across as sympathetic. Instead she disappeared from Philadelphia for almost the entire book, leaving others in danger and the police mystified, as she enjoyed a nightly glass of wine hiding in the Virgin Islands. The two-year agreement called for the assignment of twelve Senators prospects to the Griffins each year.
Our intent was to improve our record. The previous affiliate, the Adirondack Red Wings , was considered too far away for the preferences of Red Wings management, and back-and-forth player assignments, so the franchise was suspended with the intention of relocation to Toledo, Ohio, just a short distance from Detroit.
These plans never materialized, so that AHL franchise stayed dormant for years until being sold and reactivated as the San Antonio Rampage.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and assistant GM Jim Nill were present for the announcement, which was made before an overflow crowd of media and sponsors. Terms of the affiliation called for the Red Wings to supply a minimum of thirteen players to the Griffins each season. The majority of the Griffins' roster is Detroit prospects and draft picks. The title marked their second straight as AHL members. On April 14, , the Griffins and Detroit Red Wings announced an agreement in principle to extend their affiliation through the —12 season.
After the —11 season, general manager Bob McNamara, the only hockey operations chief in franchise history, retired. Initially, the Griffins opted to forgo having a general manager, instead relying on the Red Wings for hockey operations support.
On March 7, , the Griffins and Detroit Red Wings announced a five-year affiliation agreement extension through the —17 season. On June 16, , Todd Nelson was named head coach of the Griffins. This time they won it on home ice in front of a sell out crowd at Van Andel Arena — the first time that a Grand Rapids-based team had won a title on home ice.
