It's emotional in places but nothing too taxing!

Sam dreams of riches and he and Beth save up for a ticket to go to America to make their fortune and forget their troubled past.
There are good times and bad times and plenty of different characters to meet. Being easy to follow and fairly light this book worked really well in audio format and was narrated beautifully by Judith Boyd who has an interesting array of accents! My only gripe is that Beth is a bit of a wet fish and I think if I'd read the book instead of listening she would have really annoyed me - as it happened I just tuned out for a bit when she was being stupid or whiny!
Overall this is an interesting story with good pace and a bit of romance. Dos 3 livros que li desta autora, este foi o que teve um romance com final feliz, que me deixou muito feliz: Apr 07, Ana Gomes rated it it was amazing. Editora Asa, por favor traduzam mais livros dela. What a journey that was for her I really love this type of gritty, realistic historical romance. Again, Lesley Pearse has left me wanting more.

I am normally a fantasy girl, so reading a pure romance was a little outside my comfort zone - but I was sitting in Wellington Airport with nothing to do for two hours and it honestly looked like the most interesting thing on the shelf that wouldn't make me think too hard. By the time I got home, I was half way through and really coming to admire the young protagonist, Beth.

I have, of course, read the odd Mills and Boon before and my expectations were not high, but Beth is a feisty and determined girl who survives more than one bad relationship to realize she doesn't need anyone but herself.
Finding the perfect guy at the end was sort of an afterthought - though of course he had been desperately in love with her since page thirty. Gypsy taught me a lot about turn of the century America and the last big Gold Rush up to Alaska. Lesley Pearse definitely did her research.
She even travelled the route her characters would have taken and spent time in the old gold mining towns. Given that I had no expectations, this book was a wonderful surprise. Beth's fiddle playing charmed me and her story made me open to learning the history of a place I would otherwise have found incredibly dull. I conclude that even for those not interested in romance, Gypsy is a really descent read.

Esperei sempre que a Beth ganhasse juizo e ficasse com o Jack algo me dizia que ela ia acabar por poder engravidar "after all"!! And even more than the plot itself, the amazing character of one young woman who despite are the hardships and trials life threw at here, she came out triumphant and independent. The author delves into human nature, especially when it comes to the difference between genders, and explicitly shows what female vulnerability can lead to, in this case the break up of one loving family.

I really enjoyed this lovely light read after having just read a rather harrowing non-fiction. I think I especially enjoyed this book as I live in Vancouver and have visited Skagway on several occasions and especially since I have been to the "Trail of 98 Museum" and the Gold Rush Cemetery in Skagway. Lesley Pearse has cleverly woven some of the interesting characters from this period into this work of fiction.
Feb 01, Celine rated it it was ok. Everyone Beth travels with is daringly handsome, and everyone loves her fiddle playing. She's perfect in every way and the author attempts to drop her perfectness by throwing her into unfortunate circumstances. Beth's only downfall is that she's naive and a terrible judge of character.

A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget. There is no formula to her books or easily defined genre.

Whether crime as in 'Till We Meet Again', historical adventure like 'Never Look Back', or the passionately emotive 'Trust Me', based on the true-life scandal of British child migrants sent to Australia in the post war period, she engages the reader completely. Truth is often stranger than fiction and Lesley's life has been as packed with drama as her books. She was three when her mother died under tragic circumstances.
Her father was away at sea and it was only when a neighbour saw Lesley and her brother playing outside without coats on that suspicion was aroused - their mother had been dead for some time. With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children.
And they do shine universally on "Fronteiras", an intensely emotional and catchy tune WITH a bassline, though very discrete and minimal. It follows the beat more or less independently, but its presence helps to consolidate the human bond we should all feel when exposed to these celestial harmonies. New sounds, forms and structures with their own set of poetics and cultural identity.

That heavy bassline and signature Tessela chopped vocals were seared into our memories. It was worth the wait. Shout out to Nic Tasker and Whities for having such a selective ear and for making these available digitally for all to enjoy.
