She also filled us in on the process of publishing in the ebook format. My group loved her book. One member stated that she appreciated that Deep South Dead did not include scared-to-go-to-sleep images while still providing an entertaining mystery.
Another member liked that the book was easy to read, providing an escape from the stress of real life. I liked that the characters could be my neighbors, although Charlotte assured us they were not! Deep South Dead was a thoroughly Southern novel — eccentric and colorful characters, small town feel and a definite Southern twang.
Charlotte has written two more books in the series and is at work on book 4. May 21, Randy rated it liked it. This is a pretty good Southern mystery, which reminded me somewhat of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott series. The story is well-written and well-conceived, and the characters are developed nicely. The reason I gave this book only three stars is the editing. There are too many instances of missing words, using the wrong tense or using the wrong form of a word. It is very annoying to have to re-read a sentence several times to try to figure out what the author intended to say.
The other proof reading This is a pretty good Southern mystery, which reminded me somewhat of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott series. The other proof reading mistake I have noticed, and it occurs in every book in the series, is that a character is called by the wrong name. Several times in the series, a character is called by two last names interchangeably.
I would love to see these books republished after being re-edited by a professional. Despite the irritating mistakes, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it. Jan 07, Michael rated it it was amazing. Historic Preservation in a Mystery? After starting a historic preservation program at my university over thirty years ago, I thought I would never see a novel centered a fight to preserve a historic neighborhood.

Of course I'm on the side of the good guys, and if I lived down there I would join the campaign. I hope they win, but the developers returned to start their petition campaign again, and I am not sure all the petitions they recovered will be released until after the jury trial ends. I hop Historic Preservation in a Mystery? I hope to find out when I start reading the next book in the series.
I am also going to spend some time on Google maps to see what I can discover about the locale. Sep 07, Karen rated it liked it. Quirky small town characters Feb 04, C. Coleman rated it it was amazing. Murder mysteries are not my usual genre, but Deep South Dead was an excellent read! The Southern culture is exact. The characters are subtly but very well developed drawing the reader into the story from the start.
The pace is steady and gripping. There are hints that seem to lead nowhere until the end and the end is superb. This is a real page turner! I highly recommend this book. Aug 23, Lisa Crowe smith rated it really liked it. This was a very interesting and funny book. A reminder of what it was like to grow in a very small south Ga town over similar to Merchantsville.
Great read Miss Charlotte who grow up in that same small town!!! Aug 02, Anne rated it really liked it. This was a lively little book about Middle Georgia. It was a good mystery - had me guessing and changing my mind thru out the book who really did it. A woman was shot and robbed. Was it her cheating husband, her X who used to beat her, or someone else.
I never would have guess it right who did it. But I must say - I wasnt really thrilled who did it and why. There were so many other good options. Jul 17, Annette rated it it was amazing. Hunter Jones, her husband Sheriff Sam Bailey and her step daughter Bethie are in church on a hot Sunday morning when Sam is called away. There has been a murder. The woman who has been killed is a nice woman who was well liked by everyone.
Except of course the person who shot her in the back. Noreen, the dead body is the step mother of, Mallory, one of Hunter's employees at the weekly newspaper.
Mallory's sister is about to be married. Her aunt has become a wedding planner from hell. Her father has a secret. And it turns out that Noreen had several secrets too. This is a small town story. There are characters who are involved in the Sheriff's department, the newspaper, and various other citizens. Almost immediately it appears the murderer was someone from out of town. That gives everyone a feeling of smugness. Of course no one in town could be a murderer. This is a new to me author.

And, of course, I just HAD to copy the recipes all the characters were salivating over Southern recipes that were listed at the end of the book. Oct 22, Jeanie Jackson rated it really liked it Shelves: I love this series and have become so attached to the warm characters. It is fairly light for a mystery but with some seriously suspenseful moments. I like that the main character, Hunter, does not run around blindly until she trips over the characters. She is intelligent and while as a reporter she investigates, she shares information with the police who often are the ones who solve the mystery.
Hunter, Sam, and Bethie are starting their life as a family. The couple actually gets to have their I love this series and have become so attached to the warm characters.
