When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, I didn't have friends who had gone through the same thing. I didn't talk about it much with them -- I didn't want the burden of having to deal with the things I was afraid they'd say, like "Don't worry," and "I heard of this new herbal remedy What I wanted was to be amidst people who could write poems about cancer with a title like, "Blah, Blah, Blah," like the one in this book, -- people who could acknowledge fear and loss and mortality, but also make jokes.
This is not a book full of Think-Positive! It is instead a book that tells the various truths of the writers in it - cancer patients, caregivers, family members, loved ones. You can peruse poems by theme e. Yes, I do have one poem in the book, but that's not why I recommend it. I recommend it because it's the book I wish I'd had 20 years ago, when I needed it's entire wide range of words. I teach and have a classroom library. I am always surprised at the range of books that students are drawn to, and I try to stock a variety of fiction and nonfiction, of novels and poetry.
Many students have had cancer impact their lives due to a loved one suffering from cancer, and students have found these collections of poetry to be helpful and even enjoyable. I also have been profoundly moved. The last poem I shared with my class was "Gone" by Jadon Fimon.
I'm so proud that one of my poems was selected for this anthology. But reading the other poems in this collection gave me enormous solace as I have had to come to terms with cancer in friends and family. Some of these poems are tough to read, some are funny, and all go right to the heart of the struggles and rewards of facing this disease. See all 13 reviews. My blood remembering the feel of life; the Heavens exploding above my Head. The stars shooting, falling for Just us. Some of the finest poetry is inspired by fearful outcomes and pain. This poem is a testament to the power of the dark side to become a beautiful poetic muse. I weep in joy, I dance among the stars, I long for the beauty of the waves of the ocean to return to me.
