The two have some heated encounters in town but soon realize they both could use a friend, and through that common need, they form a secret friendship. This is such a complex story, I can feel the emotions of everyone involved and can see it happening all too easily.
Once you are invested in that relationship how do you explain it to your family without letting them down? Is their anyway to handle this smoothly? We follow Brooke not only trying to get by in a place where no one wants her or her family, but also visiting Jason while trying to both put her family back together and understand how her dear big brother could do the terrible thing he did.
It's a bit like a trial, with the still resonating wave of shock, with the denial, with the proofs and the revealing. Then there is the Heath aspect of this story. Two strangers bound by the same tragedy, one that changed both their lives deeply. A simple gesture of kindness though a bit strange when it comes to the part involving the car repairs brings them together in order to heal what is left of their broken hearts. It's forbidden, so it shames them and it shapes them and the reader can only hope for things to end well when everything comes crashing and burning all around them.
Still, I wanted to resonate more with these two characters.
To feel more drawn towards them, to feel their connection better. I missed the sparks, tough I enjoyed the people they became when they were together. Also, when it comes to Maggie I did understand her anger, I would have felt the same and I wish Brook has considered more her feelings. I can't say more not wanting to spoil the story for you. Anyways, I read this book with light speed as I've been waiting for it for a while and I couldn't believe my eyes when I held it in my hands.
ARC won in a giveaway. The book will come out in January And I loved them both, as I also loved Abigail's previous stories. Can't wait for this book! Jul 13, Laura Latteandbooks rated it it was amazing. This is the first book that I have read buy this author. This book was so good.
I stayed up all night reading it because I wanted to know how the story was going to end. While reading this I found that the characters were very relatable, Heath and Brooke have to mourn the loss of there brothers. In doing so Brooke is willing to give up her dream just to stay with her This is the first book that I have read buy this author. In doing so Brooke is willing to give up her dream just to stay with her family and Heath feels trapped because now he has to take on the roll of big brother when he was perfectly fine with Calvin taking on that roll in the family.
Brooke is determined to find out what happed to her brother Jason that night and now he ended up in prison. The stuff that she goes though I can only imagine. While reading the book I did feel the pain that she went through right along with her. Because how can one deal with knowing that your brother murdered his best friend? I found myself thinking many times that I would help Brooke anyway that I can so that she can get the answers that she was looking for.
To see Heath and Brooke connect over something so tragic was heartwarming for me. After reading this I defiantly have to look into the other books that Abigail has written. Aug 25, Lectus rated it it was amazing. How I liked this one. And what is wrong with me? I must have an excess of hormones or something. Anyways, I found this book deliciously wonderful. I like the writing, the voice of the MC, the development of the romance specially the development of the romance. I hate romance and all that insta love crap, but this story was not like that.
I liked that I knew what Brooke was thinking all the time and her reasons to do whatever she did. At first I was like, "what is wron Oh! At first I was like, "what is wrong this family? I completely felt the emptiness that Brooke was feeling and the her need to feel a human touch.
I was also thinking "why are people so stupid? His brother is murderer, not her or her family! Most people are vicious and just waiting for an opportunity to show it. There is nothing in this book that I did not like. Everything came together nicely; there was no quick, stupid fixes like recording a conversation when someone confesses. This story was well thought and planned. I just loved it. Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this title.
Nov 17, Amanda rated it really liked it Shelves: This story was such an emotion-jerker for me. Official Blurb courtesy of NetGalley Brooke and Heath should never have become friends, let alone fallen in love A year ago, Brooke Covington lost everything when her beloved older brother, Jason, confessed to the murder of his best friend, Calvin. Brooke and Heath were two broken children, each from a broken family, who found a kindred spirit in each other. Reading and imagining what Brooke's family was going through after Brooke's brother went to prison was torture.
The silence and the tears shed; the lack of life in general was hard to read about. The family knew that Jason was guilty of the murder of Heath's brother, but they couldn't live or forgive themselves over why Jason murdered another person, let alone his best friend. Their family was broken and outcast from the rest of society and that's something we as a society rarely think about when a human being commits a horrible act against another. I will admit, Brooke drove me a little crazy with her half-truths, especially when it came to her best friend Maggie, but I do get where she was coming from.
She felt so isolated in her life that she wanted to have some sense of normalcy and Maggie was that ticket. Maggie was probably my favorite character, followed by Laura Brooke's sister , once she broke out of her funk. Maggie was someone who wanted to bring Brooke out of her isolation and into the light. She was ready to go to the bat for Brooke over a past she knew nothing about. When the truth came to light and Maggie's friendship faltered, I was crushed for both girls.
But Maggie being a person of a big heart showed Brooke that the past doesn't have to define us, especially when the past that is haunting us isn't our fault. We can still move on and go for our dreams as long as we choose them.
Laura's arc was truly devastating. She saw something happen and kept it buried in her heart and allowed it to eat away at her. I honestly believe that Brooke finally getting Laura to talk was my favorite part of the story and how everyone started opening up a little more. In Conclusion I thought that Even If I Fall was such a sweet story that touched on how broken families cope and heal after tragedies. I also loved the fact that, while there was a romantic interest towards the end of the story, it wasn't the entire foundation of the relationship between Brooke and Heath.
I give Even If I Fall 4 stars! Nov 10, Lindsay rated it really liked it Shelves: Even If I Fall is a heartbreaking story detailing Brooke's life one year after her perfect brother murdered his best friend. The Covington family never received a reason to why their son and brother did what he did, so the four remaining members of the family break apart from their once close knit. The dad spends all his time in the basement where he makes furniture, the mom spends hours jogging and pretends that everything is fine when she visits her son in jail, Brooke has nightmares and finds Even If I Fall is a heartbreaking story detailing Brooke's life one year after her perfect brother murdered his best friend.
The dad spends all his time in the basement where he makes furniture, the mom spends hours jogging and pretends that everything is fine when she visits her son in jail, Brooke has nightmares and finds herself isolated, and younger sister Laura is withdrawn to the point where she rarely speaks and spends all her time plugged into her phone.
One day Brooke encounters Heath, the brother of the guy her brother killed, on the side of the road during a storm and offers him a ride. That moment changes everything between these two characters who are aching and yearning for some type of outlet that their family refuses to give them.
They meet in secrecy by a tree and pond and express their battered thoughts and emotions as Heath tries to understand that Brooke isn't her brother and Brooke tries to understand that there isn't a way to fix the consequences of her brother. The struggle between Brooke and Heath drew me in, and I could relate to Heath's mindset. More than once I thought about how I would react if I were in his shoes and stumbled upon a relative of the person who shattered my world. Would I be enraged at the relative even though they didn't cause my suffering or could I accept that they were innocent and be able to distinguish them separately?
Reading this story related to me on a personal level, but it leaves the reader with churning emotions as they experience Brooke and Heath's pain. They both lost someone they love and are trying to hold together their broken families while the only thing keeping them from drowning is seeing one another and expressing their emotions. Some cons include the random uncle who showed up on a few pages but never contributed anything to the story.
I also didn't like Maggie's reaction when she discovered the truth about Brooke's family. She takes it personally and manipulates Brooke by approaching her without her beloved makeup to show her how much she has been crying over Brooke keeping a secret from her. Maggie honestly needed an awakening because not everything is about her. Brooke would have told her about her brother when she felt comfortable and stopped fighting off her demons. Maggie didn't understand how torn apart and in pain Brooke was because she was only thinking of herself and how her BFF betrayed her by not spilling her darkest secret.
Secrets are secrets for a reason. I don't waltz around and blab all my secrets to my friends. There are some things we don't want people to know and Maggie's nonacceptance of that concept repulsed me. Dec 10, Johanna Montilla rated it really liked it. I can't get Brooke, Heath, Laura and Jason out of my head. I picture the characters, talking amongst each other. Sometimes sad, sometimes angry, rarely happy. This book hit me by surprise. The family is outcasted from the community, rumours and whispers following them everywhere they go. There is no escape from the scrutiny that sticks to them like glue, as if they were murderers themselves. The plot had me hooked.

The Lord of Illusion , by Kathryne Kennedy In her superb third fantasy-steeped romantic-suspense novel in the Elven Lords series, Kennedy follows outcast Drystan as he searches for the rainbow-eyed girl of his visions and finds enslaved Camille. I really loved this book. He travels the world taking people on adventures. Something was missing for me.
I couldn't turn the pages fast enough because I had to know what happened. I needed to uncover the mystery that Brooke was trying to uncover. They made my heart break, then heal itself, then break all over again. The roller coaster of emotions that were pouring from the pages hit me like a hurricane. Especially Heath and Brooke.
Their unexpected relationship that slowly blooms throughout the novel made me crumble. It felt so wrong yet so right at the same time and they turned into an OTP of mine for sure. It was really angsty though, so many outside factors pushing the leads apart and together. Sometimes i just wanted them to be to discover each other a little better. Don't get me wrong; I love sex scenes and sexiness is still Very present in this book but this book is really all about the feels and about things real people would feel if they were put in the situations like the ones these characters are faced with.
It felt relatable even though I, thankfully, haven't experienced myself in real life what these characters experience. But it somehow just felt so real and it got to me. I experienced everything Jane and Caleb experienced and it was heart-wrenching in all the best ways possible when it comes to experiencing such an intense book like this one. I looooved this 'friends-to-lovers' romance even though it was because of really sad circumstances that these two characters got together but these circumstances is what makes the romance feel 'real' and relatable, I think.
I also loved reading about, aside from the romance , the self-discovery Jane is going through, learning how to fight your demons and following your dreams. I especially loved how the author brought everything in full circle, giving readers what they long for - at least I got what I longed for.
The writing, in general, was just really amazing and the author has a really great talent I think. It left me aching for more, it left me breathless and in awe. The writing was exquisite, really and I can't wait to explore more books by this author. If they're written anything like this, they're going to be amazing, all of them. Jan 31, Sania rated it really liked it Shelves: Standalone but part of a series Ages of H and h: Will You Re-read This Book: Loved Caleb and Jane's realisation as to how much they meant to each other. What a sweet story This was a good read, I love when a heroine is clueless to the heroes feelings towards her.
The mentions of Anne of Green Gables brought back great memories. Oct 05, Ivy Deluca rated it really liked it Shelves: This, is not that book, and I appreciated that. The chemistry between Jane and Caleb is there from the very beginning. I loved their conversations, and the history Ms. Strom conveyed between Jane and Caleb with every interaction. There were plenty of moments that felt as if they could have been handled in a Romance kind of way, and Ms. Strom deliberately steered away from those, which I liked alot. Strom would overcome the differences between Jane and Caleb. From the start, you know that Jane is a city girl who loves her books, and Caleb is an adventurer who thrives in nature.
Neither is prepared to change, and their journey to a believable HEA is fully explored and well earned by the time you get to the last page. There are a couple of things that I was on the fence about. Like when tragedy happens in real life, there is a distinct feeling of Before and After the Incident.
It marks both characters and this romance, in a palpable way and that changed the tone of the story. My biggest quibble in romances besides cheating, because hard pass on those are the emotional runners. They get me, every time. Time flies by because of the running each one does from their feelings and the fear of being rejected and there are regrets along the way.
As the reader, I wanted to push them to figure it out, but like any good romance, in the end, Ms. Strom lead them where they needed to be. I loved their final scenes enough to forgive them for their delays in giving me I mean themselves their HEA. I really enjoyed this read. Jane and Caleb made an impression on me with their romance. This is my first book by Ms. Nov 12, B. Wilson rated it liked it Shelves: It's not a bad read.
I enjoyed it overall, even though I wish some things had been developed better. It held my attention just enough, but it's missing that something extra that I'm always looking for in a story. Still, it has an MC who loves books, and a modern cowboy who is a thrill seeker, so all of that leans towards fun. Plus, it has a whole Anne of Green Gables thread, and who doesn't love that?
If you're a book nerd, you might enjoy this one. Keep your tissues at the ready! Nice friends to lovers contemporary romance. I can't believe I read the same book as other reviewers. It was predictable, depressing and tedious along with some cringeworthy descriptions and dialogue. It was more a teen novel or bad Mills and Boon than a modern romance novel that the Kindle First description made it out to be. I rarely read romance and now I know why! I was just lucky it was a short book. Oct 02, Romance Rehab rated it it was amazing. Jane is a great heroine. Sure, most of them are self-imposed, but the struggle is heart-wrenchingly REAL. Me being irked, though, did cost the book a solid 5 out of 5 rating, leaving it with a 4. But, long-story-short, this was an adorable, emotional, sweet, sexy romance that is highly 1-clickable. Get to your Kindles, folks. We received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I do love romances narrated by both the love interests, it really helps me to get invested and see the whole picture. Their romance was just so desti Jane has always been the plain boring younger sister, overshadowed by her gorgeous vivacious older sister Sam.
Their romance was just so destined, yet Jane and Caleb kept butting heads and missing opportunities I just wanted to scream. The two had such strong feelings for the other for years, yet assumed they were alone in the feelings or believed it would not work out. They complimented each other but refused to ever give in, both for fear of not being good enough, but in other ways. Anne of Green Gables has become one of my recent happy obsessions this last years and the fact that it played a role in this book made my heart so happy.
It was just so sweet and relatable I was a sucker. And geez the correlation between Anne and Gilbert and Jane and Caleb was so perfect. And I totally believe that Anne of Green Gables is a book everyone can love, even the most unlikely of readers. And the fact that Caleb quoted Anne was endearing.
Side note, read Anne of Green Gables if you haven't already, you will not be sorry. This was such an angsty, emotional, romantic read and there were a few moments where both characters were frustratingly stubborn! I blew through the story in one sitting because it was a quick read and I was compelled to, pretty sure it would have the HEA I wished for, but with enough doubt that I had to keep reading just to make sure. I loved both the characters and wanted them to be happy. I really enjoyed this story and I want to check out more reads from this author.
