Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Final Unity w/ Octopimp! [Part 1]

Unfortunately, the theme is abruptly dropped quite early on--with the revelation of Malia's betrayal and the fact that the Leflers were merely making a cameo appearance. We never get to find out why Malia acted as she did, for it did seem that in spite of everything she did love Riella in her own way. By the end of the novel it is clear that we never will find out. We also never quite get any answers as to the nature of the Quiet Place--nor even any speculations that might deepen the mysteries surrounding it.

Feb 19, Chris McCown rated it liked it Shelves: I have mixed feelings about this book. One the one hand, it is a fairly entertaining story in the great environment that Peter David has created.

It has the familiar bad guys of the Redeemers and the new bad guys of the Dogs of War. On the other hand, Calhoun is in the book for, and I'm not exaggerating, 4 pages. Excalibur is in it for only a few more. First, what I liked: The bad guys in this book are really cool.

The Dogs of War are a neat concept. I always enjoy authors taking advantage of lac I have mixed feelings about this book. I always enjoy authors taking advantage of lack of constraints when writing and showing us something we would never see on the tv show. In all, the story was fast paced and entertaining, and the character of Xyon was fun to read. However, there was also aspects of it I didn't like. It doesn't feel like Star Trek. There are references to Star Trek stuff, but it's not really Star Trek.

There's all kinds of talk of destiny, and knowing how one will die, and fate that the universe has in store for you and all that. The entire scene with the Redeemers where the Overlord is torturing someone by using the words that control the universe or something like that sounds a lot like the force to me. Also, it end randomly. The go to the Quiet place, not much happens, some confusing plots points are presented about how this was the Redeemers plan all along, and all of a sudden something call the Black Mass is headed for the Redeemers homeworld.

And the only one that can save them is Calhoun, for some odd reason that is never explained.

In all, it's an enjoyable read, but it was lacking in a lot of places. Hopefully the next one will help it make sense. Apr 21, Sean Randall rated it really liked it. This probably means they're going to cause all sorts of havoc in the future, so that's interesting. That "The Dogs were making so much noise that a blind elephant could have avoided detection simply by listening for where they were and going where they weren't.

That didn't stop Krul from being utterly determined to haul the humanoid off him and tear him to pieces. Xyon seems deadly, capable and confident - all of which apply to his father, as well, as when we find out who that is we can immediately see. You cannot simply kill him in cold blood. I have earned the privilege.

Some may dismiss this a little because of the lack of the ship's involvement, but there's enough to ensure a solid entry in the New Frontier saga, there are great battles, banter, brutality and whit all round. Mar 19, Joy rated it liked it Shelves: This book doesn't take place on the Excalibur much at all.

We meet Riella who is a girl who has very strange and disturbing dreams. We meet Xyon as he escapes from being nearly executed when the Dogs of War attack the planet. He finds out that they are looking for a girl and a place called "The Quiet Place.

The Next Generation and Star Trek: May 10, Matt rated it liked it Shelves: All of them are in danger of the Redeemers, a fanatical albeit short collection of theocrats who will do anything to acquire the Quiet Place. But Starfleet ordered me back to work. Apr 03, Josh rated it liked it Shelves: Eh, this one was so-so. I mostly didn't care for it as the cast of characters I'm used to for this series was almost entirely missing, with the action instead focusing on new people. A decent reveal at the very end, but mostly, due to it being all new people, I had a hard time really caring about what happened to any of them. Jan 24, Travis rated it really liked it Shelves: Sub-plots are starting to pile up, but the introduction of the 'Dogs of War' and more with the vile, but interesting 'Redeemers', keeps the story moving and exciting.

Like this cast, but PAD's habit of wanting to be funny when a story doesn't need it and too many soap opera elements drove me away from this series a couple books later. Apr 16, Shannon Appelcline rated it liked it Shelves: A bit disappointing to have so much of this book away from the ship and our main characters, but there's some nice plot, and the characters introduced are clearly setup for the future. Feb 11, Timothy rated it did not like it Shelves: Feb 15, Peter Wilson rated it liked it Shelves: Jul 30, Benjamin Plume rated it liked it Shelves: Great until the end, which was left a little too mysterious for my tastes.

I didn't get much sense of what the Quiet Place actually was. Love David's characters, though.
