It was a laugh though, and I'd certainly read the other books in the series at some point, so I gave it 5. Oct 14, Jake Marshall rated it liked it. Gough has one hell of an imagination. Through out this book i found myself shaking my head and wondering what the hell was going on.
Jude in London is prefaced with an introductory note stating that you don't need to have read Jude in Ireland in order to follow it, though. Jude in London has 43 ratings and 13 reviews. Mandy Jo said: This week's headline? Love's a puzzlerWhy this book? not the bookerWhich book format? tr.
He creates some absolutely wonderful situations and does a fantastic job of bringing the reader into the wacky world of Jude, and a wacky world it is. Interesting read from an author with a unique writing style. This one is rather strange and something tells me I missed some of the humor. There is a fair bit of irony that I understood and appreciated, but there Mr. There is a fair bit of irony that I understood and appreciated, but there was quite a bit of what felt like British-Irish competition humor and making fun of the British humor that I just didnt get.
I did, however, thoroughly appreciate many of the jabs he took at both literature and writers, and art and art critics and awards. I had a many a laugh towards the end of the book when he addressed those subjects.
Gough has one hell of an imagination. You could argue that because of that, Jude in London really only deserves 4 stars. After a series of picaresque adventures, he is smitten by the divine vision of a chip-shop girl named Angela, and fatally mistakes her sarcasm for literal instruction when she suggests he comes back with a face like Leonardo DiCaprio. This is not a new argument, of course, having first been advanced over years ago by the Tipperary-bred author with whom Gough seems to have most in common, Laurence Sterne. He also makes a bit of a tongue in cheek commentary about happiness that I found to be spot on and a good laugh. Sep 19, Alison Gresik rated it really liked it.
And then I was perfectly oriented to savour this deliciously silly and deceptively clever book that translates Fielding's satiric voice to the foibles of Irish and English politics, modern world economics, quantum physics, and literature. I love the mix of absurdity a suit woven by piano strings , inventiveness the leveraged brick wall , and philosophy. I laughed out loud at the thought of writing the Environmental Impact Assessment for the total destruction of the universe.
And my new mantra is "Beware the human brain, it is Unscientific. It is Hardwired to go beyond the data. I was taken by his creative marketing and delighted to discover an unknown author. Barmy surreal antic lunacy, you never know where he's going, you just need to give in and enjoy the ride The whole thing is worth it if only for the description of Jude taking a dump in Regents Park, a Joyce sp I read this in two days, it was just so much fun.
The whole thing is worth it if only for the description of Jude taking a dump in Regents Park, a Joyce spoof that made me roar for twenty minutes Once you accept that anything can happen, it's enjoyable and consistent. However, there are jarring, tasteless episodes towards the end that taint the rest of the book.
Oct 02, Shyamala Ramanathan-edwards rated it really liked it. Jude in London is a modern picaresque novel, is how I'd describe it. It's really funny and very, very clever in parts, but some parts are incomprehensible My favourite bit was the Irish financiers building a wall - or trying to - by leveraging one brick into imaginary bricks. One efficiently built wall - in theory!
Nov 09, Granuaille rated it did not like it Shelves: I rarely give up on a book - but I did on this one.
While I liked the initial zaniness and the mad stories, it got too much and I gave up after pages. However if you like whacky humour, a jibe at everything - especially current Irish politics - give it a try. Aug 16, Iain rated it did not like it. Most of the jokes are old hat. Trying too hard to be clever.
