This and book one of the series are more "literary" works in the vein of Asimov rather than standard space opera fare. There are good guys, aliens, and space battles , but the story line centers on believable characters and political intrigues. I found the book hard to get through but was worth the effort. Stands alone but previous story line helps.
Good read , interesting characters. This is the second book in the "Star Frontier" series, but it is not exactly a sequel. Though you first discover these characters in his previous book, "Star Frontier", you do not actually need to read the first book to get into the story. This story, once again, is fast-paced and well-written, covering the continuing exploits of a crew of friends and compatriots as they try to establish relations with a relatively unknown, yet peaceful Empire on the outskirts of the galaxy.
Once again, Hamish Spiers has created an action-filled space opera, full of interesting characters and well-crafted dialog, which I found quite an enjoyable read. Well written, keeps building.
The story is a follow up novel and you need to read the first one to appreciate the set of characters involved. In short, you have a set of heroes called out as envoys from a human star federation to a little known Minstrahn Empire, which is apparently a peace loving place.
This Empire asked for aid from the Federation regarding an unclear problem. The plot line is fine and works well.
The character development is really thin and rather disappointing. However, it soon becomes apparent that whatever is wrong, the situation may be more serious than anyone anticipated. There are signs that there are hidden forces at work, forces that not only threaten the Minstrahn, but the worlds of the Frontier and the heart of the Federation itself.
