Following a foreword from Marsha Houston, the introductory chapter establishes intersectional studies as a heuristic to critically examine interlocking systems of oppression. However, the rhetors and audiences included as subjects of analysis represent a wide range of overlapping, fluid identities primarily within the United States.

The first two chapters show how intersectional scholarship contributes to and informs rhetorical analyses of style. Indeed, one does not need to be an active believer in or practitioner of prayer to be edified by this book. At various points, including the conclusion, FitzGerald suggests that the study of prayer through established critical methods may have important and unexpected benefits. The most obvious of these is the illumination of a ubiquitous but under- theorized discursive form. Less obvious is the potential rejuvenation of too-familiar conceptual tools. By approaching prayer through situation, dramatism, and a pair of classical canons, Fitzgerald hopes to re-establish their critical utility.

Applied with a mix of creativity and theoretical vigor, these old methods do feel strikingly new. By the conclusion, readers may understand this rediscovery in broader terms. Prayer comes in a wide variety of faiths and forms, but it is the Christian—and, to a lesser extent, Jewish and Islamic—modes that take center stage here. FitzGerald concedes as much, encouraging his readers to pursue prayer into new and diverse lines of inquiry.

Such studies might consider prayer in Eastern and New Age religions, in political settings, in movement rhetoric, or, as mentioned earlier in this review, prayer as business model. There is also room for the consideration of secular prayer, and of work and community service as prayer. In working to rejuvenate some very particular modes and methods, this book may also prompt the rejuvenation of wholly separate but equally under-theorized genres.
