Kit takes the role of thinking about what they can buy at the market; he struggles and Kat lets him struggle and then undersells her own participation in figuring things out.

This series is meant for quite young children who are still pretty impressionable; perhaps, a parent could read through the book and leave out particular chapters or, alternatively, discuss the issues that concern the adult with the child him- or herself. I wish the author weren't dead, so she could reissue the book with a few modernizing tweaks.

I read this entire series when I was 9. I remember exactly where they were located at the library Jan 02, Deb Readerbuzz Nance rated it really liked it Shelves: They live in Holland with their mother and father. Kit and Kat are not their real names; their real names are Katrina and Christopher, but they will not be called Katrina and Christopher until they are four and a half feet tall and that will be a long time from now.

So goes this little collection of stories about the two little Dutch twins. They go fishing with their father on the dyke and drive a tiny milk cart with their grandfather and sell cabbages with their father and help their mother clean their house and wait for Saint Nicholas to come to their house and bring candies and cakes.

Simple little stories, filled with little details about windmills and dykes and wooden shoes and Dutch church. Such lovely little stories that I read all pages at one sitting. Lucy Fitch, prolific author and illustrator of juvenile fiction, was born in Maples, Ind. Perkins' "Twins" series of books sold—and still sell—in astonishing numbers, furnishing pleasant and mildly instructive reading matter for at least two generations of American children.

Probably no series of juveniles—except possibly the "Brownie" books by another Indiana author—has run through so many individual titles. The chronology of the bibliography reveals two occasions and when the author made an effort to abandon twins—only to be forced by her publisher and her juvenile admirers to resume writing about them.
