Tate has a struck again with this series starter and you will be sucked into the vortex of this world full of mystery, intrigue, games, drama, murder, and lust so fast your head will spin. Rybit is a thief and through an unfortunate incident has been thrown into the royal court. Girlfriend has to fake it to make it and someone is out to get her. Its soooo good and all I have let to say is hurry up with the next book Tate, please and thank you! Nov 26, Natalia rated it it was ok. My review is basically what she said: Must also add that RH books are not my thing!
Oct 22, Miriam rated it did not like it.
When I read the synopsis of this book, I was thrilled. It's exactly the kind of book I look for. Strong female protagonist, fantasy setting, sexy men, a challenge. However, it suffered from so many basic problems from the beginning that I found zero enjoyment in this book. Conceptually, ok there's actually a rich tradition in antiquity on similar themes.
But the author just drops this information in the first couple of pages without building up the structure of this world and investing the reader with any sense of the stakes in this historical outcome. Also, why do the princes need to wear masks? So commoners can't see their faces. Ok, but to what end and for what purposes?
It just seems like a stupid plot device that enables the author to make her "big reveal" at the end I skipped to the end, but I guess this well before I did 2 Predictable -- within the first few pages I could already guess a major revelation of the story view spoiler [ Rybet will end up being this missing princess introduced at the start of the book. Also the teachers being the princes was pretty obvious from the beginning hide spoiler ] 3 Probably my biggest pet peeve when it comes to writing anything that isn't set in a contemporary context Rybet and her friend constantly refer to each other as "babe" and there are lots of "fucks" interspersed throughout the story and dialogue that don't seem suitable for this not-well-conceived-fantasty-universe.
Also, "curtsying for dummies" She is infuriatingly one dimensional with respect to this character trait throughout the story and honestly doesn't experience any growth in my view. Overall, this book had an interesting idea although it's very much ripping off "The Selection" by Kiera Cass, which I also didn't like for the same lack of character development and world building , but failed miserably in its execution.
On another note, maybe reverse harem just isn't for me. I've tried giving so many reverse harem series a try and they all suffer from the same problem. It almost seems that for every author writing in this genre including this one the plot is secondary to the sexy times between the female protagonist and her harem of dudes.
I'm all for sexy times with multiple men, but for the love of God, your damn story needs to be good for me to even care about those relationships in the first place. Nov 04, Lauren the Book Slayer rated it did not like it. Just a heads up, this is an unpolished, scathing review, and I feel justified in sharing it, because this book is a complete knockoff of a great book. While I was reading this book I kept having deja vu.

I totally just copied the description for The Royal Trials because the story line, minus a couple changes here and there, is the same exact one as Throne of Glass. Throne of Glass fans, don't bother reading this one. It's a poor rip that's not worth your time. It not only came first, it's got a complex characters, great world-building, twists, actions, some forbidden romance, and so much more!!
Great start of to this series. This book was both surprising and entertaining. The royal trials are no joke. The Royal Trials are an age old tradition gathering all the eligible maidens to the castle to participate in games to marry a prince So so so wrong this is a sadistic twist on that. During the rescue attempt she is caught by the kings own notorious spymaster and and the only escape This was a super enjoyable read with tons of action, drama and intrigue. Some of the deceptions were of course pretty obvious but I felt like the author did that on purpose and made the story more about the ride, not so much the destination.
This book counts towards my RHR Bingo challenge: I'm not my brothers, and I won't offer you sweet nothings and conversation. If you come to my rooms, you'd better be stripped of that lovely blue dress and waiting naked by the time I get there because I will accept nothing less than all of you.
I won't hold back, and I won't woo you with pretty lies. You're an attractive lady, much more so than anyone else on offer right now, and if you were to come to my rooms I would use you in every way I have fantasized since first laying eyes on you. Nov 30, Annabel rated it it was amazing. I really loved this book, it was a bit predictable at times but it didn't bother me at all.
And that ending is just brutal! I need the second book like yesterday! Nov 05, Mary Ellen rated it it was amazing. This one was so much fun. I was able to predict a lot of it but I loved it all. I was surprised with how dark it was and love the direction the story is going in. Now that the end I was able to predict most of this book I am baffled at what will happen next. I am definitely interested in reading more of Tate James work. Oct 14, Jennifer rated it it was amazing. While I could guess a lot of things as it seemed pretty obvious I still enjoyed the way it got to the answers.
That ending just has me needing to pick up the next book kinda wish I waited till they were all out but I am not very patient. Sep 26, Siri rated it really liked it. Dec 10, Nikki Jefford rated it it was amazing. Imposter, for me, was the ultimate escape. It had ALL the things: One of my favorite reads of the year. I am SO ready for book 2! I am SO so SO happy to read that the followups aren't too far behind.
I cannot wait for book 2! Dec 06, Kristen rated it really liked it. Totally predictable, but the writing and dialogue is fast-paced and enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one! Sep 25, Em rated it really liked it Shelves: Sep 29, Puna rated it it was amazing Shelves: I love Tate James, her Kit Davenport series is amazing and it's one of my favorites.
I was super excited when she announced that this was going to be her next project and I couldn't wait for it. The wait is worth it. It may not replace Kit and her men but it doesn't mean that I didn't love this and enjoy this! I can't wait to keep reading about her and when she grows into the true kick-ass women she's meant to be I'm so excited for the truth about her to come out. I want to learn more about them, their backstory. But so far I love them. Tate is the best and worst at this!
I'll be waiting for the next one. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. After failing to retrieve her friend from the castle dungeons-young mercenary and pickpocket, Rybet from the Pond, is thrown into a trail to become the next Queen. However, keeping her identity a secret and not falling for the three princes isn't the only thing she has to worry about Was she so focused on getting him out she didn't even get information about it just rushed right in..
Almost all of the other girls were 'villainous and evil', except for the "mousy shy girl" Hell if I was in a fight for my life and I saw someone act like they could give a shit less about the princes, becoming queen, or succeeding in the trials- and openly flirting with the tutors -and still being favored by the princes--I'd be a bit peeved too. Maybe not kill her status, but still..
Also, Rybet was kind of a cocky bitch- sometimes it worked other times it didn't. And the three love interest.. Oh and ps- how the hell did the Princess chick get second place in the trial when she missed three of the first tests? I do like the political intrigue, and I'm wondering what the repercussions are for after. I know that the King said that all of the families basically sent their daughters to die, but will the public support a crown that killed so many women if it gets out? I am also very interested in how those disappearing villagers are being changed.. Sep 29, Michelle rated it really liked it.

Her honesty, strength, and compassion are such bright lights amid the sniping and shallow conspiring that surround her during the trials. She's forced to masquerade as a proper lady, but being "undercover" doesn't strip her of who she really is. I enjoyed that Tate let Rybet shine through no matter what name she was currently being addressed by.
I don't think I've picked a favorite yet for two reasons: Zan, Lee, and Ty are this triad of super attractive instructors that Rybet is immediately drawn to. Zan, the master of politics and culture, is the most aloof. He can run hot and cold, and Rybet questions whether or not he feels the same pull that she does. Lee is thoughtful, softer spoken, and initially appears to be the romantic of the bunch.
There's some quietly entrancing about him; you're drawn to him before you've even been able to explain why. Lee is the botany expert: Ty is the flirty, physical, and fierce combat instructor. Like Lee, he's easy to like.
He makes the effort to create a connection with Rybet, and I felt like he quickly realizes that something about her is not what it seems. Now, here's my big conundrum with this book. I felt like a lot of the "mysteries" really weren't mysteries. OK, maybe the issue will be that she gets involved with a harem of servants and becomes part of a rebellion. It didn't take long for me to dispel that idea and realize that he was really one of the princes. Rybet IS this long princess, c'mon! I truly cannot decide if this is a writing issue, or if this was done purposely.
Honestly, I'm not sure I even really care either way. Tate has crafted this amusing, fun, and tension-filled story with a little death, a lot of conspiracy, and enough flirtation to keep me hooked.
I enjoyed the Imposter, and I don't mind the lack of mystery because Tate won me over with the rest of storytelling. Sep 25, Blendy rated it really liked it Shelves: Well, that was fun. I really have mixed feelings about Ms. So I went into this one with a little trepidation, expecting to either hate it or just like it. To my surprise, I actually really liked it! Rybet is a thief and hustler. Taken in at the age of four by the Lord of "t Well, that was fun. Taken in at the age of four by the Lord of "the Pond", she has been trained not in the ways of being a high born lady, but rather, in the ways of being a street delinquent, and she's good at it.
Rybet has to become a lady. Not just any lady either, Rybet has to become a lady that is competing for the chance to marry a prince. If she wins, she gets to live maybe , become a queen, and she can try to create change in an uncaring world, but if she loses, then death is her only option. What's the problem then? Well, Rybet absolutely cannot stand the three princes Alexander, Louis, and Thibault that she is competing for, someone is out to sabotage her trials, she is developing feelings for her tutors Zan, Lee, and Ty , and Rybet is an imposter. How can she marry a prince when she is falling in love with the help, and how can she become a queen when she was never meant to be in the trials to begin with?
Imposter was very reminiscent of The Selection by Kiera Cass to me. We have an H that is competing against other females for the chance to become royalty, and we have lies and deceit at every corner.
You know, if we just had the love triangle, Jeb and his dickish tendencies, and Al from Unhinged , who is perfectly okay with sticking her head in the sand and letting a whole world die if she can be normal, goddammit! If you come to my rooms, you'd better be stripped of that lovely blue dress and waiting naked by the time I get there because I will accept nothing less than all of you. So when a high school girl is stabbed and arrives unconscious at the hospital with little chance of survival the secret government agency that TESS works for decided to send he in on her first mission: I just really find the seial killer thing fascinating-- says the girl who wants to study criminology--adding the powers Variants have I need the second book like yesterday! In addition to Kate, Franny was the stereotypical mean girl. It's been a minute since I last read somewhat of a 'taboo' subject that this one seems to be leading up to reverse harem and let me tell you this book brought my love back to life.
While the H is still only eighteen, it wasn't something that was obvious with every decision she made or word that she said. Yes, she still has her immature moments, but it wasn't enough to make me want to bang my head against my iPad repeatedly. The storyline is completely transparent, as I think it's supposed to be, and that lent to my excitement while reading it.
I honestly could not wait to see how Rybet would respond to the "reveals" and how these "reveals" would take place. Of course, as soon as shit starts getting really interesting, we are completely smacked in the face with a cliffhanger ending not cool Ms. James, not cool , but I've come to expect that with books lately. I should have waited to read this book until details of the second book were at least available, because now I'm in that long-haul wait--the one that makes me a damn stalker. I'll be stalking Ms. James' Facebook and website for snippets of news and updates on the release of the second one of the series.
Sep 25, Jordan rated it it was amazing Shelves: Oh My Goodness words cannot describe how much I loved this book Let me just start by saying Tate James is an amazing author, like seriously one of my favorites. I love her Kit Davenport series and anything she writes with CM Stunich is great, so I was super eager to get my hands on this book. It was originally supposed to be part of Once Upon A Harem, but I am so freaking happy she decided to make it a trilogy!!!
My expectations for Imposter were pretty high given Oh My Goodness words cannot describe how much I loved this book My expectations for Imposter were pretty high given my love for all of Tate's other books. This fairytale retelling of the Frog Prince sounded interesting to say the least, but after I finished I can safely say that any previous expectations I had were completely blown away. Rybet is such a great character with a big heart and even bigger beliefs.
She knows exactly how she feels and is pretty stubborn about changing her mind. After entering the trials on accident while trying to save a young boy, Rybet is trapped, bound by an oath to remain in the trials until death or marriage. While she makes her distain for the three princes and the royal family very clear throughout the book, she grows close to the three men in charge of the first stage of the trials. Lee, Ty, and Zan are teachers in the trials who all become close to Rybet, or Lady Callaluna who she is pretending to be.
She becomes torn between her new friends and her survival, trying to win the trials. I really enjoyed the guys' characters. They all have specific interests that are essential to the trials and the story giving us a chance to get to know them more thoroughly. I also really loved the larger plot playing in the background of the trials. The world Rybet lives in is dying, has been ever since the queen was killed and her daughter disappeared. The royals are supposed to have magic, but it appears that the current king and queen aren't living up to the expectations of the land. There is corruption and evil lurking behind the trials and I can't wait to learn more and watch everything play out.
This book did end on a cliffhanger I literally just sat there processing for a few minutes after finishing because wow. I need need need the next book like yesterday! But despite this cliffhanger I am still crazy for this book. Imposter is such an amazing story with a fantastic plot and characters with lots of depth. Tate James has done it again and I am very eager to see where this series will take us! Nov 19, Erin D rated it it was amazing.
