Where did you fierceness go?
I enjoy it very much when an author can surprise me with the depth of feeling they invoke. There has to be something about romance books that speak to women and at least one male. It's amazing how that can just turn your stomach. Thanks for telling us about the problem. You could have many discussions about consent:
I had a difficult time getting into this book and I still think the way Caitlin and Wesley first meet is a bit silly and unrealistic. I kept on turning the pages, though, waiting for something to change - and then it did. I found the romance between Caitlin and Wesley a bit secondary, given everything else that is happening at the same time, but the rest of the plot, once you finally get into it, is intriguing enough to keep you trying to guess what might come next. Very well written and historically interesting, even though a few of the dialogs seemed slightly too modern.

John Wesley Hawkins was in the process of being hanged for treason and heresy, when the Lord Protector steps in and offers him his life if he will agree to go to Ireland and to gain the secrets from the rebels leader. Caitlin Mac Bride is mistress of the Irish castle Clonmuir and she's loyal to her countrymen and is also, the leader of the rebels against the English.
She has but one wish for herself, true love. I love historical fiction, I hate historical fiction about Ireland filled with folklore and legends She should stick with contemporary fiction! I really did like this book. There were however a few things that disturbed me. I did not like the deceitfulness and how long it continued.
He should have come clean once relationships had been formed. There is a sex scene. His only problem is, when he finds out the infamous rebel is an Irish beauty named Caitlin MacBride, and she is a strong woman with the weight of an entire clan of people on her shoulders. Wesley arrives with the intentions of capturing the rebel and freeing his daughter from Cromwell, but all those intentions get sidetracked when he sees the injustices happening all around the MacBride and finds his attraction to their leader, Caitlin, distracting.
Caitlin MacBride is like no other female of her time. She knows her clan leader father has good intentions but is apparently scatterbrained, so she takes up the mantle of her people in making sure they are fed and clothed and safe from the invading English. Caitlin holds little regard and no trust in the English, but when she meets Wesley, he feelings begin to soften, until she finds he is a traitor and a liar.
What happens in this epic tale will surprise you as it takes us from Ireland to England and back again. Wesley and Caitlin are two strong characters fighting for their very lives and two character, unafraid of doing what it takes to get the results they need. I have not read many tales set in this time-period or in Ireland, but I found it to be a delightful and insightful story.
It was a bit tedious at times, and I did set the book aside a few times and then go back to it later, and I am I did, because it truly has a great outcome. Dec 25, Reforming rated it did not like it Shelves: Wanted to like it, but it didn't hook me. Great read with enjoyable characters The first thing that caught my eye with this book was the cover art - I thought it was quite pretty but you can't base a book off a pretty or awful cover so curious I was. When I first began to read, I thought ehh I don't know about this I loved them together even though Wesley had his own plans but for good reasons.
He eventually begins to form feelings which he never intended to do. I loved how he on numerous times tried to woo her which she doesn't give in - but almost does many times. But hey who could claim Cait, the man had such sweet words that left his lips an a smile that could melt butter. There were other great characters such as Tom Gandy whom was very likeable and mysterious at the same time, Rory was a bit of a hoot especially when him and Wesley were sizing up their manhood with one another during a bathroom run, and then the on going bickering from Logan and Magheen was a bit amusing too.
I also liked how Susan managed to infuse some Irish dialog and Gaelic phrases in this book - it made the characters more real and lifelike. The story is very intriguing, funny, and well written. I feel that the characters were human in their dealings with their surroundings. You have a man who was about to hang at Tyburn prison, then released by the Lord Protector. John Wesley Hawkins being ready to die for treason and heresy, got mercy from his deeds if he would agree to help England.
But John doesn't have much of a choice because his small daughter is being held to gain his submission. All John has to do is find out who is the mai The story is very intriguing, funny, and well written. All John has to do is find out who is the main man in the Irish resistance. Therefore, John being a handsome and smart will seduce the secrets from a Irishwoman named Caitlin MacBride. She knows who is involved but John has his work cut out for him. But Caitlin is one smart lady who helps the rebels but won't trust any Englishman especially John. Caitlin is strong in her beliefs, but sometimes she wants to have what other females have.
She's not beautiful like her sister who has a husband who loves her. Caitlin will find her true love, but what's at stake may be harder to deal with than she can bear. As a reader, I was totally taken with this book. Thanks Net Galley for letting me review this wonderful romance.

Too bad for Cromwell, Wesley falls in love with her and decides to trick Cromwell into releasing his daughter and ceasing his attempts to crush the Irish. To do so, however, he has to keep his real intent from Caitlin and still protect her from Cromwell. How he does so makes for a swashbuckling action-packed story that finally though not without mayhem first ends well for all but a few. If you like characters from opposing sides. The characters a little more complex than I usually expect despite the occasional sexist remark and the plot was quite well-thought out. Overall, Wiggs' novel was easy to read, and I'd consider her in my repertoire of authors I'd pick up when the time comes.
This book was different from many of the other historical romances out there today. The female lead is a headstrong, iron-willed woman who is trying to keep everyone under her care safe. Although there were times where I wondered where this book was going I will say that the second half of the book is better than the first half. It is very well written with well developed characters and the story line is decent.

Dec 01, Kaza added it. While the book was well written and engaging, I didnt particularly like Wesley. He was a bit too smarmy for my tastes. It was hard for me to like someone who had delibrately lured many women into bed. In a time when their chastity meant everything. In contrast to the selfless life Caitlin lived for her people, it seemed especially selfish.
When considering whether I like a book or not, I have to like the main characters. One rule of thumb for writers is to tell the story mostly from the POV of the character who has the most to lose. I might agree with Wiggs that the primary pov character should be the hero here, but I felt like the same story told from the heroine's pov might've been far more emotionally powerful.
Even so, I enjoyed the story enough to give it 4 stars. I did not really like this book. Wesley, did nothing but lie through the whole book. He lied about everything from their first meeting to the end. I couldn't feel any great respect for Cait as a result of her letting his lies go. He betrayed her over, and, over again. She was supposedly so strong, and, yet she showed no backbone at all throughout the book.
I expected more from this author. This was a fun light romance to read But I really liked the rest of it. Caitlin was such a feisty heroine and I was surprised by how much I liked Wesley! He really stood up and supported her in being an independent lady and I loved that about him. It took me three months to read it.
Draw your own conclusion. I wasn't in a rush to finish it. It bore me a bit. The characters were likable, but the story didn't move at a fast enough speed. Too much flowery, unnecessary prose. The beginning did not grab me right away, but I eventually could not put it down. Could not give it a 5 due to the slow start and the fact that I found one of the secrets being kept, was not quite plausible. Couldn't believe it was such a difficult secret to tell. Mar 19, Janie Weimer rated it really liked it.
Excellent details -- made me feel like I was in Ireland. Great sense of place. Enjoyed the characters, but plot movement went fairly slowly as did character development. Liked the intrigue and the splash of magic thrown in. I'd read something else by this author. This story wasn't as good as I thought it would be. While The Wolf and the Dove doesn't do this exactly, I still have my copy. I liked this book because there is no character rape. There is a near rape, and how this is not a rape is absolutely wonderfully explained.
It sounds weird, but if you read the book, you'll see. The would be rapist is not the romantic lead, but the villain.
There really is romance in the book and not simply sex. I suppose to even call this book a trashy romance novel is doing it a slight injustice. It is a romance novel, a woman's story. And for whatever reason, something women like. If you are thinking of reading a romance book, this is a good one. The female character is also strong emotionally, as is her mother. Woodiwiss deals with the theme of the conquered and the conqueror very well. The book is something of an examination of these roles, and, therefore, not a typical romance.
I was told on Very Good Authority to simply throw in the towel and bail because this book is a big buttload of Nothing Happening. My valiant completist side was being sorely tested by pg. There were no likeable characters - Aislinn's mother acted insane maybe the lithium imbalance is hereditary and Kerwick was a classic PITA. I've just did a re-read of this book for a group challenge and I found that I still love this book after all these years. I know some people are critical of the style in which Ms Woodiwiss wrote, accusing it of being purple prose. But I personally enjoyed it. It had an almost poetic feel at times but it wasn't confusing to me at all. I will still recommend this book to Historical Romance lovers. View all 16 comments.
One of the best bodice rippers I ever read as a young impressionable woman! Jun 07, Ingela Hyatt rated it it was amazing Shelves: She was the daughter of the lord of Darkenwald, proud, wise, and uncommonly beautiful, but now Aislinn is but a slave to the conquering Normans, a plaything for the man who killed her father. Sitting in the hall with rope tied about her neck and forced at the feet of her captor, she watches helplessly as the Normans ransack her home and abuse her mother. But she will have her revenge—no Norman will ever conquer her, nor will she ever give up the only home she has ever known.
Born as a bastard an She was the daughter of the lord of Darkenwald, proud, wise, and uncommonly beautiful, but now Aislinn is but a slave to the conquering Normans, a plaything for the man who killed her father. Born as a bastard and scorned by his mother, Wulfgar has come to hate women. Though dispised because of his birth, he is fair and just with all whom he meets. When he arrives at Darkenwald to discover the knight he sent, Ragnar, to secure the town has killed the old lord and most of his serfs, Wulfgar becomes furious and suspicious.
But when he espies the courageous Aislinn struggling to bury her father—he wants her. Never has he met a more beautiful or bold wench with such a stout heart—and he will tame her by every gentle and seductive means necessary.
Aislinn shall never willingly submit to any Norman—her hatred for them knows no bounds—until she meets the handsome and formidable Wulfgar, who challenges her at every turn. Despite the fact he is a bastard and a Norman, he seems unusually honest and is more handsome than any man has a right to be. Why does his kiss make her insides quiver? Why does he prefer to chain her to the foot of the bed instead of raping her as Ragnar has done? He is kind and fair, but his justice is swift and terrible.
How is she to resist this man who asks nothing of her, but seduces her into offering everything? Why is his heart so hard where women are concerned, yet his touch so gentle? Wulfgar has always been able to love a woman and leave her without nary a thought to cloud his mind. Yet, when William the Conquer demands his presence in London for his coronation, it is Aislinn who haunts his every thought—the softness of her fiery hair, her womanly fragrance, the passion in her touch, the feel of her in his arms. The vixen must have bewitched him—it can be the only explination, for Wulfgar must have her at his side, no matter the cost.
But how can she give herself to a man who will never wed her, who holds only pain and hatred for women in his heart? How can she ever turn his mind to the tenderness she would give, nay the love which has grown inside her? He told her no woman had ever tarried in his mind, yet he called for her. He swore never to waist his hard earned monies on a female, yet he lavishes her with gifts. But he refuses to give her the one thing she so desperately yearns for—his love.
Can she ever make him acknowledge the love burning within herself? Or will the enemies plotting against them succeed in ripping them apart and destroying them forever? Woodiwiss is a classic epic tale of love, passion, and revenge. The historical detail beautifully enhances this sweeping story and pulls the reader into the turbulent time of the Norman Conquest.
This novel has been on my keeper shelf for many years now, and after re-reading it, I have to say it is no wonder Kathleen Woodiwiss inspired a genre which has taken the world by storm. With elegant prose, deeply emotional characters, and exciting settings, Ms. Woodiwiss was a master of her craft. Whether a novice to the genre or an old fan, I highly recommend you read or re-read as the case may be The Wolf and the Dove and be prepared to be swept away into a world long past Jul 19, Vivian rated it liked it Shelves: My rating remains unchanged after this reread.
I first read it when I was approx. While I like the medieval period enormously, the Norman invasion and the shifting politics, I still have parts of the story that don't quite work for me. Aislinn is the daughter, only child, of the Lord of Darkenwald when Norman invaders take over, killing her father, and raping her.
Yes, this is an old school bodice ripper, so it is problematic in many ways by today's standards. You could have ma My rating remains unchanged after this reread. You could have many discussions about consent: I'm not going to dissect or complain about that in the review.
I guess my main grievance with the story is the version of miscommunication, here. To be fair, the power imbalance of conqueror and conquered creates a whole slew of issues from loyalty to honesty to trust that hinder communication. Add in stoicism and past abuse and you have limited characters abilities to interact in a healthy manner. And this is why this book rates three stars for me and not lower.
There is an intrinsic difference between tattling or failing to resolve your own problems and safety and welfare. Aislinn, even after being told directly and indirectly, refuses or is unable to address issues with Wulfgar regarding not only her own personal well being, but Darkenwald's as well. Frankly, the first failure I get. The second, which is Aislinn's main motivation for remaining after the invasion, to care for the inhabitants is an enormous fail. She fails personally and as a leader, and all the small individual triumphs of her actions are overshadowed.
Wulfgar, a bastard son, raised by others as was the custom in training young men has understandable and formidable emotional issues. He has the emotional age of maybe nine years old, and compounded by abuse and abandonment means he's raw and has to learn not only how to behave with Aislinn beyond sexual congress, which he is surprisingly good at for someone with little regard for females, but also understand his own feelings.
Hampered protagonists trying to fight their way to love from an inauspicious start. This might be a bit belabored, but it is realistic in timescale. The part that made it feel really slow was all the countryside wandering, I guess there needs to be something going on while Wulfgar and Aislinn are trying to figure things out. The mismanagement of risk assessments I suppose is what really didn't work for me. It allowed problems to fester and grow and become huge and potentially catastrophic. This one had so much potential for greatness, but it dragged on for what seemed like FOREVER, going from one conflict to another and another.
The way I see it, the story was unnecessarily lengthy and a lot the word count could have been better used to create This one had so much potential for greatness, but it dragged on for what seemed like FOREVER, going from one conflict to another and another. The way I see it, the story was unnecessarily lengthy and a lot the word count could have been better used to create a more reasonable, natural, organic ending.
I also want to mention that the fade-to-black love scenes were snooze-worthy. Reminded me a lot of the eyeroll-worthy fade-to-black love scene in that popular book where the Dawn would be Breaking. So, if you like a little more steam factor in your romance reads, you will be a bit disappointed with this one.

I read a lot of fantasy which can be pages or more, so what's and 3. I read a lot of fantasy which can be pages or more, so what's and some? Apparently a lot when the focus is all romance. The author stays "in character" throughout the entire book. Meaning the speech and prose keeps the feel of a historical.
She's thinking like they'd think. Using words like 'portal' instead of 'door'. This never feels contemporary. I respect that amount of effort by a writer, but not everyone will appreciate it. So the story starts off pretty brutally Our Saxon heroine's home has just been taken over by the Normans. Her father is dead, her mother beaten, her people killed, turned into slaves and some of the women raped.
Her betrothed is now a slave and is chained with the dogs at one point in the book. The conquering warrior protagonist that killed her father intends to rape and keep her for himself, and when the Hero arrives, so does he. Aislinn is forced to choose whose whore she'll be and she chooses the lesser of two evils. Wulf doesn't rape her immediately, but he does eventually take her against her will, and on more than one occasion.
He does not feel guilt. He does not feel remorse. He laughs at her. The sex scenes are not what I'd call graphic If ever there was a book deserving the title of 'bodice ripper' The poor girl couldn't keep her clothes intact. She is beautiful and everybody wants her. Her feelings for Wulfgar get muddled.
She is attracted to him and she feels shamed by it. He is not unkind to her people, he seems to be a fair leader. Though he has an ulterior motive for every kindness he bestows, he is way better than the alternative. He still does very bad things or allows his men to, but usually it is to teach his new serfs a lesson. Aislinn resists Wulf as much as she can He has to work for any response he gets out of her even though she wants to love him, if he'd only love and respect her back.
She pleads with him to marry her so she doesn't have to live as a harlot. She amuses him with her wit and fiery nature. He tells her quite seriously that he will never marry and he will move onto the next woman when he tires of her so she would do well not to fall in love with him. This is pretty much the entire book. Some subplots are going on, some of the history of battles and such thrown in There are some strange reactions such as laughing or being happy at really odd times. Some sentences are so old English that I had to read them twice to figure out what the character was trying to say.
Some of the Gwyneth aspect was hard to swallow. Overall, I enjoyed the reread. It's considered a classic, and I can still see why. The conversation was so forced, it was like watching an old play, with, I shit you not a proper damsel in distress. And he is the classic mustache twisting villain. The author has proven that she has the uncanny ability to overstate the obvious I thought you want to eat for a completely different reason She tries to imitate the old way of speech and fails miserably, making the the entire book grate on your brain And she's all like: I wanted to slap her silly The stuff that get's published Apr 10, Kari rated it really liked it Shelves: This was my first Woodiwiss book.
I had a lot of expectations since this is a classic 70s romance which I think everyone has read at some point. It was very well-written, the dialogue was very "medieval" and you feel like you're right there in the middle of the story. At times I found it very long, like the author could've chopped off pages and it wouldn't have made a difference. Wulfgar, the hero, is very "medievally" barbaric but I found him oddly attractive: Aislinn was a bit of a wu This was my first Woodiwiss book.
Aislinn was a bit of a wuss from a modern standpoint, but these were medieval times and the poor girl is getting her clothes ripped off half of the time so you feel for her, and I don't think there is anything she could've done differently considering the time period. The ending was very nice, we get a few suprises and a HEA. This book came so highly recommended and I was so excited to finally get on with it The Heroine, supposedly a spitfire, acts like a complete sissy in front of the "enemy" - The hero.
Just 25 pages into the book and the "Hero" who is indirectly responsible for the heroine's father's death as well as that of several of the her country men is getting glances from the the heroine with "something akin to tenderness" in them?!!! And he is the same ma What a disappointment! And he is the same man who has taken her up as a slave and made his intentions clear about the use of her body-services.
And the crap just goes on and on. She is making salve to heal his wounds. She feels pity for him. She is jealous for him. She is confused because of her love too, where IMO nothing the hero did was worthy of inspiring love. And when wiser lady, the heroine's mother, does dare to suggest that they run away from the cruel confinement imposed upon them, the heroine acts all smart and wants to save them by deciding to do the "wiser thing" and not run away. How this book came to have such a good rating from GR users is absolutely beyond me.
