Perfect summer reading, and so much more fun to imagine it all in your head! Folkestone is the gallant British officer, but for my money, Felix Hand is the soldier I'd want backing me up.

When they see waves of energy being directed at them from the hands of an old Martian sitting in the sand they realize that this will not be a normal investigation. This is a very well written book, the characters are well thought out as well as the various worlds where this takes place.

I wanted to give the reader a greater view of that Solar System. For the most part, it adheres to the tenants of Victorian astronomy. One of those tenants was the existence of the planet Vulcan.
Not the well-known planet from the famous television franchise but a small planet orbiting the Sun between the Sun and Mercury. In the process, the reader visits Mercury, gets a side trip to the Asteroid Belt, and, of course, another look at life on Mars. In the first book, the reader got a glimpse of London; here, the reader is afforded an even longer look at 19th Century Paris and all the changes brought about by the Industrial Illumination, as they refer to it. We also learn a bit more about the Alexandrian Diffusion, which, more than anything else, turned the course of Empire.
However, the book is not about wondrous places, skewed history or epic adventures; it is about the characters who live in that universe, and I think you will like them, even the black hats of the story.
