Have you ever wanted to disappear? When Imogen Naughton vanishes, everyone who knows her is shocked. She has a perfect marriage. Her handsome husband treats her like a princess. She's always said how lucky she is. So why has she left? And how will she survive without Vince? It's in the Manhattan of gin, jazz and prosperity. Women wear makeup and hitched hemlines - and enjoy a new freedom to vote and work.
Not so for Evelyn Lockhart, who is forbidden from pursuing her passion to become one of the first female doctors. Chasing her dream will mean turning her back on her family: Every family has its secrets. Some are small, like telling a white lie or snooping through a private drawer. Others are more serious, like infidelity and betrayal. And some secrets are so terrible they must be hidden away in a deep, dark place, for if they ever came to light, they would surely tear a family apart The Tides are a family full of secrets.
Returning to Clifftops, the rambling family house high on the Dorset coastline, youngest daughter Dora hopes for a fresh start, for herself and the new life she carries. But can long-held secrets ever really be forgiven? And even if you can forgive, can you ever really learn to love again? Secrets of the Tides is the spellbinding debut from Hannah Richell; a rich and compelling family drama with a dark thread of suspense at its heart.
Read by Emilia Fox, star of Silent Witness. I found this story captivating. It was skilfully written painting vivid pictures of the characters and events that unfold. Hannah Richell writes with great insight into the complexities of family relationships. If only more families had the maturity and sense to, in time work through the aftermath of their mistakes, loss and grief. I eagerly await her next novel The Shadow Year due to be published this year I hope Audible will add this one soon!
A highly emotional story about a family who suffers tragedy. Well written as we are taken along with each of the family members - flipping from present time, back to the past. A couple of times i found i just wanted to flip back to see what had happened in the past when it had gone back to the present time - but i contained my suspense and kept things going in order of the book. I have found this week whilst reading the book i have been holding on to my children a bit longer than usual I really enjoyed this book.
It had a lovely way of weaving the reactions of the characters to the single main event. It is a very human story, with a few twists and turns.
I enjoyed the reading voice as well. Well worth a listen. This book was a real treat and I didn't want it to end. I could picture all of the characters, the setting and the events perfectly. I would highly recommend this book.
An intense story describing difficult times and their fallout that hopefully not many will feel, beautifully read and presented by Emelia Fox. The book captures and describes situations, places and emotions clearly and in a way that makes it easy for the listener to feel part of. Really enjoyed this book, don't know how I ended up downloading it, but glad I did it was nice to get lost in cliff tops for a while and was impressed by the twists in the story. I would read another of Richells novels based on this audio book.
A gripping story of a family changed by the choices they made in one day.
When characters get under your skin in the way the Tide family did for me, you know a book is of a high calibre. It also tears apart this family What an awesome book! Hannah Richell writes with great insight into the complexities of family relationships. It also got me thinking just how a simple word, a hug, a kiss could fix everything sometimes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Emilia Fox reads with such passion. This was a great read a heart wrenching story a family torn apart by tragic events the characters are so vivid beautifully written and the narration was brilliant would recommend. I really think the author could have thought up some more believable names for her characters. It's as if the author thought she should write a story, rather than having a story that she needed to write.
Very lightweight, unconvincing and boring.
Heartbreaking at times but an excellent story. I am so glad that I decided to download it. Hannah Richell is writer I will look out for in future. The narration, by Emelia Fox was perfect. Would you listen to Secrets of the Tides again? What did you like best about this story? I liked that you could recognise who she was playing through out the performance. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Emilia Fox reads this book beautifully, but the story is a little frustrating and some of the writing is hackneyed. Dora is a compelling character and the best thing about the book - even if her patience and capacity for forgiveness are a little too good to be true!
