There was also nudity and adult situations, and I went meh over those too. I get that the story was noir, but there was nothing groundbreaking or, at the very least, even entertaining about it. Touched 2-stars for it was okay. The storyboard left a lot to be desired. May 17, Craig rated it liked it. This first volume was all right, but maybe not the most successful opening storyline ever.

I really felt that it was aping Powers at times in the early going, sort of a "Powers lite" almost. It didn't seem like Oeming had his own voice. But things got going and it got better. It ultimately builds to a very satisfying climax and conclusion, but getting there was not all that easy.

The artwork was a bit rougher than what I'm used to. I've been with Powers since the beginning and I really like Oeming's style, but some of these panels were really hard to make out and figure out just what was going on.

Also, I know the story is advertised as "for adults," but all the swearing got to be a bit much and I'm no prude when it comes to swearing--this just seemed extraneous after a time. Swearing is fine when it means something, when it reveals a character or something, but this was just too much. That said, I would certainly give further volumes in this series a try. This was a total loss--just not everything it could have been.

Apr 28, Ogreart rated it it was ok Shelves: Not entirely sure how I feel about this series. It's very gritty and graphic. It's a little slowly paced. Not sure whether or not I would continue the series. The Victories are a team of superheroes, with member Faustus being primarily featured in this volume. Through the course of fighting crime, Faustus is forced to revisit and confront painful memories from his past. The harm that was done to him is threatened to be exposed, and he has to make choices that may alter his life as a hero. The other members of his team are there to provide support, and one member is also tied in closely with this story. As a superhero team, this felt like a much needed breath of fresh air.

I loved the youthfulness of the characters and there established relationships felt like they had weight and history. Michael Avon Oeming's drawing style is a bit like caricature, but the weightlessness of his heroes flying through the sky is breathtaking and exhilarating. I look forward to seeing what else The Victories get up to. Jan 14, Cliff Bumgardner rated it liked it. I think as an introduction to this series this issue doesn't quite do everything it should.

I can't really tell you what the world of the book is or what the story will be.

However, I am interested, and I'll read issue 2, so it did it's job there. Michael Oeming has gotten acclaim for his series Powers, which I've dabbled into a bit, so I'm not going to fault the man as a writer, he seems to have just lost his charm for this outing. I look forward to seeing what else The Victories get up to. Like most people who will pick up this book, I was drawn to it because of Michael Oeming's work on the Powers series. Powers was a slow burn for me but I stuck with it and now it would take a pretty awful drop in quality to shake me loose. That hasn't happened yet - instead it just keeps improving.

I think Oeming's art has got better and better as Powers went on, while always maintained its most striking and unique qualities. The artwork in The Victories is still unmistakably Oeming, but he has introduced a new feel that makes it distinct from his previous work. More distinctive still is the writing: Michael Oeming's scripting is fun, complex, powerful and feels very fresh and new.

His ear for dialogue is great. There also seems to be a very personal thread running through this story, possibly some catharsis in its telling, which is moving, brave and deserving of much respect.

I'll say no more on that, but leave it to the reader to see if they get the same message. I'm really keen to see where Oeming takes these characters and this story. I'm signing up for the whole ride. How much I like this book may be best illustrated by what I would compare it to: I found it overly unpleasant and not well-written.

If you want to make a comic that involves the feelings of shame and loathing that being molested engenders It's probably not well-framed as a superhero styled comic, though. I didn't find the plotting or the dialogue to be well-done either.

I still love Oeming, and enjoyed some of his art here, but I don't love this comic. See all 7 reviews. Amazon Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
