Since the fall of the empire in World War I — and the establishment of the Turkish Republic in , foreign food such as French hollandaise sauce and western fast food have made their way into the modern Turkish diet.
The most popular sport in Turkey is association football soccer. Other mainstream sports such as basketball and volleyball are also popular. The basketballing team is one of the most successful in the Mediterranean Games. Another Turkish basketball club, Anadolu Efes S.
