I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves the sea and the men who survive on her.
If you like "The Deadliest Catch," you'll like this book! It's a well written novel interspersed with factual chapters on the commercial fishing industry. The only rock I can throw has nothing to do with the writing, but the editing. They're many needless misspelled words sprinkled throughout the text. One would think the proofreaders would've caught them. A minor annoyance that really doesn't distract too badly. All in all, if you're interested in Alaska and the commercial fishing industry, you'll like it. A novel along with historical discussion of the history of modern fisheries in Alaska.
You follow the growth and struggles and triumphs of a wannabe fisherman until he becomes the high liner he aspires to.
The 60s and 70s of Alaska come alive. The book is better than my lame review. Great story about the Alaska fishing and crabbing by the commercial fishermen and what they have to put up with on the fishing boats and the hardships they go thru. Keeps you wanting to read more. Really really enjoyed this book - the story is very readable and I think written well. The interspersed fact-based sections show an in-depth and very informed knowledge on behalf of the author of all aspects of Alaskan fishing - and that augments the understanding and enjoyment of the story significantly.
If anything the story is a bit drawn out in places - but overall I found it very memorable and enjoyable.
