The second entry into the bowl of souls series is a step in entirely the wrong direction. The problems with the first book in terms of story cohesion and character motivations are magnified in this book. The reason they give for forgiving him is that Vannya is his daughte The second entry into the bowl of souls series is a step in entirely the wrong direction.
The reason they give for forgiving him is that Vannya is his daughter and he allows them to sneak out of the mage school He suddenly forgets that this is the same guy that provided two boys with what almost became a date rape drug, lied to him and the council in order to get Justan into the mage school, and sent in his daughter to befriend and spy on him.
Jan 19, Kathleen rated it liked it Shelves: I'm barely hanging in there with this series. It's not bad, but the author needs to tighten up his writing, cut to the chase, and create a cohesive plot with clear connections between scenes. Some scenes felt unnecessary to the main plot. Some actions didn't suit the character traits the author is striving to portray. And for me, there's a bit too much bloody battle and evil torture, etc.
Plus, the dialogue is weak and the camaraderie between the protagonists doesn't quite ring true. The Dwarf, I'm barely hanging in there with this series. The Dwarf, especially, gets on my nerves. His portrayal is overplayed.

I do like Fist and the elf. And at least there is no sex and little swearing, even though there's so much blood and guts. The price is right, so I might try one more book in this series, even though the series feels too long for such a simple plot kill him and keep him dead already. Nov 14, Steven rated it really liked it.
The second book was just as good as the first but reverse: Sep 24, Gautam Surath rated it really liked it. Mr Trevor where have you been all this while. Its been a while since I got so nicely drawn into a world creation. The last I remember is Jim Butcher dragging me into Alera. But Trevor's style continues to be his simplicity in narration. There are no sudden upheavals or dramatic discoveries. Each protagonists POV is beautifully crafted so much so you begin to fall in love with many of them.
There is an innocence about it that keeps you smiling at most times. And through it all there is progress t Mr Trevor where have you been all this while.
And through it all there is progress to the plot and some interesting sub plots. Lets see where we go from here! Mar 27, Ken30MU rated it it was amazing Shelves: I devoured this book. Didn't want to put it down. Book 1 opened a lot of doors. Book 2 this book tackled a lot of what was opened. But of course the adventure continues The characters are interesting and fun to get into. The writing is not subtle - the author typically tells you what they all think - but this is fine with me - easier to follow. Oct 25, Rob Davies rated it it was amazing. Yet another excellent instalment of the Bowl of Souls story.
I can not fault this guy or his books, true entertainment! Each chapter makes me love Justan, Fist, Qyxal and the rest of the cast more yet makes me hate Ewzad more Dec 11, Miles rated it did not like it. I tried book 2 in this series because it gets good reviews. Characters are poorly developed and are basically fantasy stereotypes. Oh, and the main character is a whiny demigod. This reads like a dumbed-down Modesitt novel. Jan 25, John Keyser rated it it was amazing. Thoroughly entertaining After a long hard day I look forward to a few chapters of Trevor's writing.
I am not easily impressed but his writing is one of my great escapes. Sep 07, Alexis W. So exciting and fun to read! I really like the characters although they can get little confusing. Dec 05, Bill Tillman rated it it was amazing Shelves: Messenger of the Dark Prophet For me it's a toss up. The two are seamless and take you into a world of magic an mayhem fit for any fantasy fan.
Dec 05, Mary rated it really liked it. Same style and pacing as the first book. Although I had to wonder why he consistently blew off people who had something important to say. Mar 14, Daniel rated it it was amazing. Another Good One I am feeling like I am going to really like these books. The action and adventure is great and all but the MC magic is what does it for me. Can't wait to see where it goes next. Jun 16, Mark Halse rated it liked it. The story continues from book 1, and it is just as great!! I immediately started book 3, can't get enough of this! Jun 16, Matthew rated it liked it.
I am not sure this can even deserve three stars. I am still unsure what made the first book so enjoyable, it just seemed to play all the tropes we've come to expect straight, but in an enjoyable way.
However, this book plays all the tropes straight in the most cliche and unenjoyable way. And then just to be sure, the author added in whatever else asinine, annoying things he could come up with for no apparent reason. The shifted perspectives are even more common i Utterly, criminally disappointing. The shifted perspectives are even more common in this book, but lack all the charm Eye of the Moonrat had. The lovable Fist only exists to have bad things happen to him in this book, and furthermore his character development regresses so far back, passing his ogre origins, to finally lands on a cardboard cutout.
Deathclaw - read the first interlude with him, then ignore the rest, because every time he shows up later it is a rehashing of the previous time. In fact, his whole purpose in the book is useless. Justan, yup he also regresses to basically a cardboard cutout that reacts based on idiotic instinct. He is 19 or 20 in this book and acts like he is 12 or What is this trash?! Furthermore given all that he has gone through, he should be infinitely more mature than he acts. The story has become nonsense.
The first book was mostly slice of life with an overarching adventure moving it along.
I can't even make sense of what happens in this book. It was as if a squirrel with A. You know what, this doesn't deserve 3 stars sadly. While I enjoyed parts of it, I barely finished it and it has just made me angry.
I do NOT recommend this book to anyone. Aug 14, Michael Patty rated it it was amazing. Despite his strong desire to follow in his rather famous father's footsteps and become an Acadamy warrior, Justan has found himself instead enrolled in the Mage School. What I really love about this chapter of the epic "Bowl of Souls" series is that it reveals the interesting way in which magic works in Trevor Cooley's world.
Not just the elemental magic he is to be tought at the Mage School but Also to be revealed are additional bits of the villainous plot unfolding behind the scenes as Justan adjusts to his new life. I loved following Justan's trials and triumphs. As has already been said, it is a worthy successor to Cooley's first book, "Eye of the Moon Rat. The tale has grown and developed, just as has it's protagonist.
Jan 31, Nicola Hawkes rated it really liked it. I have really enjoyed reading the first 5 books of this series and the novella over the last couple of weeks. And despite the vivid imagination of the author with his monster creations, the champions were almost always capable of destroying them very quickly. But I did I have really enjoyed reading the first 5 books of this series and the novella over the last couple of weeks.
But I did want to know what would happen, and I thought the imagination behind the stories impressive. But a good series to become absorbed in for an entertaining and unchallenging read. Mar 04, Anoop Menon rated it really liked it. A very interesting series from the start, i managed to go through the whole 5 books and greatly loved this series.
The well written characters were that of Fist and DeathClaw; Justan was more annoying in the first two books, making mistakes which i believe were necessary for the books to move forward and strangely naive The most interesting story line was that of William and Theodore Loved the series , watch out for this Author he knows how to dish out a great story.
Jan 30, Dany Zaidi rated it it was amazing. The Second novel begins with a bang like the last left with one. The whole series through their were many surprises that added dimensions to the novel. I especially liked the fact that Justan now has another love interest that is competing with Jhonate. I like the concept of him being a special kind of mage.
In fact now that I think about it he could not possibly be another type without it destroying the character persona that the author was developing.
His mage ability compliments his warrior n The Second novel begins with a bang like the last left with one. His mage ability compliments his warrior nature beautifully. Enough said this is another of Trevor H. Jan 19, Natasha Chowdory rated it really liked it.
Waaay better than the first one. Justan is more likable and the introduction of new characters makes the story more interesting. The actual writing is still pretty darn lame though I have to say. It's a shame that the words don't match the richness of the story. But as before it's a pretty fun fantasy read.
