Why was the summer such a care-free time for the characters in the story? Why was this significant? Describe Gene and Phineas. How were they the same and different? Who are you most like? Why did Gene have a sense of rivalry with Phineas?
How did this manifest? Did Gene shake the tree and cause Finny to fall on purpose? Why does Finny defend Gene about this? How is Gene and Finny's relationship different after they return to school in the fall? How do the boys decide to figure out whether or not Gene shook the branch intentionally? Why is this scene important to the novel? What does Finny's death mean to Gene?
Now tell students they will more closely examine themes in the story. Hand out copies of the lesson A Separate Peace Themes. Ask students to read the first three sections of the novel, stopping before reading 'Themes in A Separate Peace ' Define the term 'theme,' then break students into four groups. Assign each group a theme from the novel and ask them to read the section from the lesson describing their theme.
Instruct groups to create a poster of their theme that includes text evidence to support the analysis. Tell groups to include several questions as part of their presentation to ask the class. When Finny succeeds at sports, Gene feels the need to succeed at academics to prove his worth. Gene immediately starts dressing like Finny and believes they look exactly alike.
Codependency Erases Identity 3 The injured Finny lives vicariously through Gene by training him in sports. Since Gene dislikes himself and likes Finny, he is happy to assume Finny's identity. Summer literally and figuratively ends when Finny falls. Winter The winter session symbolizes the unpleasant responsibilities, hardships and loss of hope that can come with adulthood and wartime.
