Two Brooks is the most isolated village in Hawk Island, surrounded by high cliffs and flanked at each end by a brook.

It is a village of tenacious people, hardened by isolation and punished by nature with crude winters and burning droughts. It is also a place forsaken by God and men that Hawk Island stands in the middle of the Atlantic, small and defiant, like its people. The village priest, Monsignor Inocente, is doing his best to keep his parishioners on a path of moral rectitude. Unfortunately, he is also fighting forces he cannot control. When three young men disappear, the villagers diligently search for a plausible explanation. While the villagers grapple with their seemingly justifiable fears, the monsignor asks for help from the mainland.

But what no one knows is that his decision will set off a chain of events that will forever change life in Two Brooks. In this spiritual tale, a priest living in an island town plagued by dark secrets and strange occurrences must attempt to keep the peace among terrified villagers after three men mysteriously disappear. I wanted to give more than 3 stars, but there are some problems with this novel, even though, I enjoyed it and will read the next books. There are too many characters, which does not allow for the proper and full development of some of them. The sex scenes are somewhat gratuitous and border line pornographic, not very common in a conservative and superstitious society.

The author clearly used real places to create these fictitious ones, but she puts in to many similarities for someone who knows I wanted to give more than 3 stars, but there are some problems with this novel, even though, I enjoyed it and will read the next books. It has a splash park in the summer and a snow hill for the winter, Hawk Island is a wonderful green space in Lansing that has a small swimming area with a beach, an elaborate splash park for the kids to get wet and cool off, plus a very nice play area with wooden gym equipment. Our 2 year old This has a nice paved walk around a lake, which is hooked up to the Lansing Bike Trail. So it is a good place to walk or ride. It would be good to bring a picnic in the summer time. I love walking there, biking through, taking grand kids, and my classroom when I taught school, to this wonderful area for swimming and recreational play.
