Both these powers proved useful as Jela and Cantra searched for information necessary for mankind to escape its collapsing universe. The name Jelaza Kazone refers to the promise Cantra yos'Phelium made to Jela, who knew he was destined to die before the migration could be complete, to see the tree through to safety on the new human homeworld.
Clan Korval holds itself the guardian of this promise in perpetuity, and every trading vessel of Korval carries a seed of the tree somewhere on board, to ensure the survival of its race. A great deal of the Liaden culture centers on melant'i.
Part of this concept is roughly analogous to personal honor or good manners: It is also used to distinguish between a person's different roles in life. If one is speaking to a shipmate in one's role as an officer of the ship, one uses a particular mode to cue the shipmate as to the formality of the situation, and is said to be expressing one's melant'i as that officer.
If, on the other hand, one is speaking to the same shipmate, but in the role of daughter, one uses a different mode and is expressing the melant'i as a family member. Different levels of formality, and actions, will be appropriate in each case. Human ships are able to travel quickly between planets by "jumping"; different technologies exist but are all fairly quick; journey durations are comparable to swift sea-travel here on Earth.
Only the Clutch Turtles use a different method, with predictably idiosyncratic side-effects of which few details are available. Propulsion and artificial gravity is provided by Struven Surface Units which Theo describes as having a "sense of presence. Ships range from single-person courier; small trade craft; private ships; long-loop, family trade ships depreciated in modern shipping ; large trade ships often carrying a Master Trader ; bulk cargo ships; and large passenger liners.
There are of course many specialty craft for station maintenance, and other utilitarian functions. In this era of relative peace, there is little mention of purpose-built military ships, except for the battleships of the warlike Yxtrang though mercenary companies have troop ships and various support ships. Planetary governments may have small fleets of fighter craft, for defensive purposes, that operate both in air and near space.
It is not uncommon, however, for merchant ships to carry weaponry to defend themselves from pirates and brigands. Some large trade ships, such as Korval's Dutiful Passage , have incorporated enough weaponry to be considered full battleships. Pilots are shown deference in the Liaden Universe, both in Terran and Liaden space.
Pilots are addressed as "Pilot" as an honorific title. Pilots must have superior reflexes, coordination, and spatial orientation. Pilots need proficiency in higher mathematics to be able to quickly and accurately solve equations in trajectory, orbital mechanics, and jump coordinates to many decimal places ; one does not place one's life and one's crew or passengers in peril should computer navigation fail. A pilot needs to be able to defend herself in the low port or away from civilization, thus trains in self-defense and personal weaponry.
The Pilot is responsible for the ship and passengers; the Co-pilot is responsible for the pilot and ship. Bechimo adds, "the ship is responsible for pilot and crew. The co-pilot, or acting co-pilot, "sits Second. Many, if not most, pilots belong to the Pilots Guild. Each Guild Hall has a Guild Master. The Guild certified Pilot Classes: First Class, Jump Pilots are awarded and wear a Pilot's leather jacket.
This heavy duty garment, with many internal pockets, is both a sign of rank and protection against weather and misadventure. Only Jump Pilots wear a Pilots Jacket, this is not by law, but tends to be enforced through "social pressure" which may become physical. Master Pilots may train and certify pilots. A pilot in training will be granted "provisional" status in grade as the student advances.
Lee and Miller strongly oppose any fan fiction written in the Liaden universe. Steve and I do not sanction fanfic written in our universes; any such work that exists, exists without our permission, and certainly without our support. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theo's adventures as a courier for Uncle, then with Bechimo she contracts for a trade loop with Korval, now installed on Surebleak.
Further adventures as Theo pilots Bechimo under contract to Korval. The Clan deal with Surebleak and the Department of Interior. Pulls together most of the loose threads from earlier novels, including Clan Korval, Surebleak, and Theo threads. Beset by the angry remnants of the Department of the Interior, challenged at every turn by opportunists on their new homeworld of Surebleak, and somewhat low on funds, Clan Korval desperately needs to reestablish its position as one of the top trading clans in known space.
To this end, Master Trader Shan yos'Galan, aboard Korval's premier trade ship, Dutiful Passage , is on a mission to establish new business associations and to build a strong primary route that links well with existing Loops and secondary routes. Pursued across space by the ultra-secret Department of the Interior, hunted by the galaxy-wide Juntavas syndicate, former Agent of Change Val Con yos'Phelium and his ex-soldier lifemate Miri Robertson have commandeered the only spaceship on Vandar and fled, seeking help from Miri's newly discovered kin on Lytaxin.
Elsewhere, Clan Korval is in action. Scattered across space by the newly invoked Plan B, certain clan members pursue the search for the long-missing Val Con. This long-awaited culmination of the Agent of Change sequence of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's internationally acclaimed Liaden Universe novels pits unexpected friends and unexpected enemies against each other in a war that spans planets and races - and threatens to bring interstellar violence to the very surface of fabled Liad. But that was before Torin learned the truth about the war the Confederation was fighting That was when Torin left the military for good.
The victory parades are over and half the fleet is back in mothballs. The Navies better start getting them back in Commission! Rita Longknife, commander of the heavy cruiser Exeter , has proof. Proof that there is something else out there. Proof we are not alone in the galaxy. Aboard her ship is evidence that we have blown up an alien ship, and they have blown up one of ours. Theo Waitley is an ace starship pilot — and pure maverick. Her mom is a renowned Terran scholar and her birth father is an interstellar aristocrat in hiding. She still feels like a socially challenged misfit. But after being selected to train with the best-of-the-best at the pilot academy, she figures she can leave behind those gawky, misfit days of teenage angst that made life so complicated before! In this book, Theo Waitley meets and pilots Bechimo, a fabulous self-aware space ship of artificial intelligence, created centuries before by "The Builders" of mysterious origin.
Theo and Bechimo engage weapons, battling the evil Department of the Interior. Theo and her AI ship slowly develop trust in each other, with some bumps along the road. Sometimes amusing little spats, as Bechimo is unsocialized, having been alone and in hiding for centuries. Theo pilots her Ghost Ship to planet Surebleak. Clan Korval has arrived and Jelaza Kazone sentient, ancient, wizardly tree is sinking its roots in, influencing the micro-climate.
Surebleak citizens welcome Boss Conrad's kin, who promise to maintain an open Port Road. Wild, lawless Surebleak is adjusting to a more benign form of leadership, and most folks welcome Boss Conrad's government style, but change is difficult, and Korval must deal with sabotage and even worse. Nelirikk gets to leap into action, along with Val Con, Theo, Daav, etc. Of course, the treacherous DoI is at work here.
Now, with three on board, the interaction gets more interesting. Soon a fourth crew member boards.. This section of the story is brief. There is a short story that elaborates on it, called Prodigal Son. The POV changes too much. Sometimes before you can turn a page. The story ends on a major cliffhanger, involving Daav yos'Phelium and Uncle. This book and the next book Dragon Ship and the next book Necessity's Child collectively go almost nowhere.
It's an interesting and sometimes highly entertaining journey, walking in circles, but compared to the plot of Tolkien's trilogy, these three books are meandering indeed. Oh, and a baby is born. Several sweet scenes with Tree, too. Narrated by Eileen Stevens. The narrator is okay, for the most part. Lee and Miller will be panelists.
The Friends of Liad will host a party, and a FoL breakfast. You could ask them about the guy who got stuck in the chimney one year, I think it made national news. Hope you and Steve have a good trip, do you prefer to travel by train or is it merely the lesser evil? Your email address will not be published.
