Following almost a century of warfare, the Xhosa peoples of the Cape Colony were finally defeated in the Ninth Xhosa War of The Colony had been administered by the Dutch since , with the addition of British settlers in the 19th century.

The author takes the reader through the history of conflict including such landmark events as the battle of Grahamstown, remarkable for the part played by the Xhosa commander-priest Nxele, who was convinced that bullets had no real substance. The means of controlling the local peoples was to allocate land for them in different areas, but the Gcaleka people crossed the Mbashe River in an attempt to return to their homeland, while tenant farmers on the Waterkloof area increased their stock of cattle, leading to struggles for scarce resources and clashes with the police.

The Ninth Xhosa War started when a brawl at a wedding escalated into local warfare, in which Bartle-Frere's aim of uniting the peoples of the Cape under British rule was fiercely challenged by the Xhosa.
