For Ages 3 and Up! Delicate imitation design likes a mini battlefield. Instead of fighting Native Americans or train-robbing outlaws, space heroes battled universes full of alien enemies. Suddenly, there were two tough characters in town, each too big for his britches—the cowboy and the astronaut. Though their worlds were light years apart, these two fought head to head when it came to the attention of kids, and their moneyed parental units. Although manufacturers never placed the characters in opposite corners of the ring, at least not officially, in the world of play, every kid had his favorite and knew who would win when the day came for the Lone Ranger and Major Matt Mason to face off.

Classic toy collectors tend to agree: Regardless of the newfangled gadgetry and futuristic advantages of spacemen, in an all-out battle, cowboys win hands down, at least in our hearts. Yes, space toys superseded Western ones in terms of production, sales, and general popularity, but we still pine for the rugged cowboy.

I had so much fun until I often sit around and reflect on my childhood; I definitely had a memorable one. It was a time that I would relive in a heartbeat. Coming from a family with both parents, caring and supportive siblings and extended family members, I experienced the best of life. Many of my childhood memories are of the fun I had playing in the streets and playgrounds with my friends as a little boy.

Of course, learning to ride my bicycle is a memory that will always be with me.

Roller skating with the clamp secured rolling skates is another of those unforgettable memories. I played or recall these games from my elementary school days. But, prior to those days, from age four to eight, my fun-time memories were involved playing with the small metal and plastic cowboy and Indian figures that many little boys played with, back in the day. Let me describe the cowboy and Indian figures that I was fond of playing with as a little boy.

These figures were approximately two and a half to three inches in height, usually made of plastic but occasionally made of metal, quite often of one solid color but sometimes painted with considerable detail. One could purchase these figures in various poses; shooting a gun, displaying a bow and arrow, or designed to fit on a horse.

You could find these figures in practically any pose that you can picture being displayed by a real live cowboy or Indian. I recall being introduced to these figures through my love for model trains. If you were exposed to trains, you may recall that model trains with layouts generally contained figures that were associated with trains; porters, track workers, etc. As I built scenery for my train layout, I would ask my parents for other figures to be a part of my train layout.

When my train layout began to expand, I devoted sections to a town, a circus, the military and the Wild, Wild West. With each section of my train layout, I would have figures appropriate for the scene.

Kids' Toys & Accessories by Category

It was from this experience and my love for movies featuring Johnny Mack Brown, Sunset Carson and the Durango Kid that I developed a keen interest in these cowboy and Indian figures. So, while my love for model trains during my childhood days centered on the Christmas holidays, miniature cowboys and Indians became a focus throughout the year.

If you recall shopping at one of these or other five and dime stores, their toy sections were a favorite of most children. Do you recall standing on a small ladder or stool to observe the toys that were on display on the long and wide tables inside of the five and dime stores? Do you recall these figures being sold in plastic bags or in card type sets with the cowboys or Indians attached to the cardboard?

These figures were sold in some neighborhoods at the local supermarket, the corner drug store or the variety store. The best supply was purchased at the downtown department stores that had toy departments or those stand-alone center city toy stores. These stores had the best supply because they had a variety of figures; both plastic and metal.

These toy departments and stores often sold cowboys and Indians paired with snap-together forts, wagons, teepees and related western accessories. Small rocks and tree branches were incorporated into my battles. I recall lining up my cowboys and Indians to engage in battle, fighting until the bitter end.

Back then, the bitter end came when my mother called me inside for lunch or dinner. Interestingly, playing with my cowboys and Indians did not involve others; playing with them was an activity involving but one person. The one thing that stands out with regard to this activity was how engaging cowboys and Indians challenged my imagination and my creativity, back in the day.

The Cowboys

I created mountains and caves out of the sheets. When I did not have a store-bought fort, cereal boxes were used in their place. I obtained clothes-pins from my mother or popsicle sticks from the trash for use as trees, canoes or weapons. At a very young age, I found myself profiling my figures even though I had no understanding of what profiling meant. I profiled my figures by designating good cowboys and bad ones based on certain characteristics. For reasons I cannot explain, the cowboys with beards were always the bad cowboys.

My Indian figures were all bad. I suspect that they were viewed as bad because of how they were portrayed in the movies.

The metal cowboy figures, with details such as boots, holsters and large hats, unlike the plastic figures that were of one color with no detail, were the good cowboys in my world of playing with my cowboys and Indians. If any of you recall these days, you may have done as I did!
