The quiet, bookish John who is a favorite both of his retiring paternal Aunt Virginia and rakehell maternal Uncle Charlie is the protagonist. It is the tragedy that occurs between Charlie and Virginia that is responsible for precipitating John into manhood even more so that Charlie's taking John to a Hagerstown whorehouse. The second half gets a bit bogged down in courtroom procedure but the depictions of John's pubescence and early adolescence are vivid and true as is Bishop's eye for the natural world.

I bought a book of Bishop's poetry hoping it to be naturalistic like his prose in 'Act of Darkness'. It was rather disappointing post-modern type verse, however.
Still, on the strength of this, his only novel; John Peale Bishop remains one of my favorite American authors.
