May 06, Selah Pike rated it really liked it Shelves: I liked Kate, loved the Jane Austen references, and was surprised by a couple of twists. Nov 02, Susan rated it really liked it. A nice English flavored cozy with a little Jane Austin sprinkled on top. I enjoyed it a lot. The small production company she works for cannot afford to have a missing owner who may have slipped into his bad habits. Kate arrives full of worry over the disappearance of her mentor, intrigued with locations as any devote of Austen would be, and struggling to find her way in small town intrigues. When Kate finds Kevin's luggage without any trace of his film equipment she suspects something sinister may have occurred here.
She encounters local scout, Alex, who had worked with Kevin and is equally puzzled over his disappearance. Rosett sets beautiful scenes, captures pub life, and introduces the reader to a colorful cast of secondary characters. Kate navigates through this world, slowly learning not all small town residents are trustworthy.. I found this to be a straightforward, easy read. The book was full of anecdotes on village life in the English countryside along with beautiful scenes.
It was not full of graphic violence and tended to focus more on the details of mystery. I look forward to reading the next in the series as Rosett leaves the reader wondering what will happen next for Kate and Alex. View all 3 comments. I didn't think this was a bad start to a new series. The main character has some spark and is the type of personality that can adapt to different situations easily, So I don't think there will be a problem with her leading this series into further stories. The mystery wasn't impossible to solve, but there were enough possibilities that I didn't guess one hundred percent correctly about the motive right from the beginning. The author did a good job with descriptions of the surroundings and made the setting feel genuine. I wasn't certain of the language used at times though. For being English, some of the local character's speech didn't come across as particularly British. Overall I thought this was an interesting start to a promising new series and liked the way the author handled her set up. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley.
All opinions are my own. Don't bother with this book. Poor writing, poor plot, poor characters in fact poor everything. Poor old Jane Austen gets dragged in unwillingly again through no fault of her own, the main character supposedly looking for a location, allegedly in England and looking for a colleague who has disappeared. An American author trying to write about England and it doesn't work-sorry. I found myself getting irritated with English people speaking American.
Advertised as a "cozy" hmmm. I'll g Don't bother with this book. I'll go back to Agatha Dec 18, Leslie rated it really liked it Recommends it for: When he fails to return his colleague is sent to Derbyshire to find out where he went. Her boss, Kevin Dunn, is currently in England, scouting locations for a new version of Pride and Prejudice. When he doesn't return home on schedule, and no one can locate him, Kate is the logical choice to fly over and try to find him - both she and another employee, Marci, are convinced Kevin may have had a 'relapse' and is merely recovering from a bender; in which case it will be Kate Sharp is a location scout for Premier Locations, a company dedicated to finding the perfect locale for movies.
When he doesn't return home on schedule, and no one can locate him, Kate is the logical choice to fly over and try to find him - both she and another employee, Marci, are convinced Kevin may have had a 'relapse' and is merely recovering from a bender; in which case it will be up to Kate to find him first and do some damage control. When she arrives, she doesn't find Kevin, so she enlists the help of a local photographer, Alex Norcutt, who was working with him, to see if they can reconstruct his movements.
While scouting around for Kevin, Alex shows Kate the locations they were considering using, and she gets to meet several of the people in the village, which is all to the good, because when they do find Kevin - and I am not giving anything away, because as this is a mystery, we all know Kevin isn't going to survive - Kate has a whole list of possible suspects in the murder to choose from. When it is discovered that Kevin didn't die from an accident, but was in all likelihood murdered, in steps Detective Inspector Quimby, who sets about the investigation first questioning Kate's and Alex's possible involvement regarding Kevin's death, which doesn't gain any points with her, but the questions still have to be answered.
The clues were there in the subplots of which there were a few , all interesting in themselves. When the murderer was finally revealed, it was tied into something else entirely, and also entirely believable. Here's to a new beginning in a new series, and I eagerly await the next installment. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review but this in no way influenced my decision.
Jul 16, Mandy rated it it was ok Shelves: After all, the whole first half of the book seemed to foreshadow some sort of "appearance is very different from reality" theme which Kate apparently wrote some thesis about. But such a plot twist was not to be. The plot trudged along predictably enough, and I wasn't even surprised by the revelation of the murderer. I'd have pegged Eve as the most uninteresting suspect from the start, because she'd be so predictable. When Kate started getting excited about various details falling into place but deciding that Eve definitely had to be the one who had sent her Kevin's camera because of the way she folded wires, really?
Because no one else could fold wires in that same way? Talk about jumping to conclusions , I was actually bracing myself for a bigger plot twist at the end. What if it hadn't actually been Eve, and Kate had let her prejudices get in the way and suspect the wrong person when in fact it was actually someone that no reader would've suspected, a la Agatha Christie murder mystery.
Unfortunately, again, that fell flat. The premise of the book was really interesting, and for that I'd give it the 2 stars. It failed to impress with the conclusion of both the romantic and the mystery plots, however. Death in the English Countryside by Sara Rosett is a delightful cozy mystery.
It is the first murder in the Murder on Location series. Kate Sharp works for Premier Locations in Hollywood as a location scout. She is also a Jane Austen aficionado thanks to her degree in English Literature. He never made it home. Kate is sent to England by Marci, Premier Locations office manager, to see what happened to Kevin and make sure he is not on a bender. After arriving in Nether Woodsmoor Kevin's last location , Kate connects up with Alex Norcutt, a local location scout, who was working with Kevin.
Kate finds Kevin, but he is not alive.
Kate is determined to find out who killed her boss and friend. Kate with the help of Alex follows the clues to find out who killed her friend. I really enjoyed reading "Death in the English Countryside. The English countryside was described beautifully and the mystery was well plotted and kept the reader guessing while clues were scattered throughout. I considered this a satisfying mystery and deducted a star for the errors obviously the book was "proofread" by Spellchecker. Now I must be off to read "Death in an English Cottage"! Jun 03, Brooke rated it it was ok. I was very much looking forward to this book, but it really fell flat. I couldn't relate to Kate, the main character, and her sidekick, Alex, was equally blah.

Although the premise of being a location scout for a reboot of a Pride and Prejudice movie was interesting, Kate just couldn't pull it off. The murder of Kate's boss seemed halfhearted and I struggled to decide what Kate was more interested in: Jan 02, Judy Esposito rated it it was amazing. I really love this first book in this new series. I like the heroine, Kate and all the secondary characters.
A fun and light mystery with no sex and no bad language. Looking forward to the next one. Great to be back in England again. I like Kate Sharp, the character who had to make trip to England, and I like Alex, another character who luckily lives in a village in England.
