Oracle was invited to become a member of The Document Foundation. However, Oracle demanded that all members of the OpenOffice. The name "LibreOffice" was picked after researching trademark databases and social media, as well as after checks were made to see if it could be used for URLs in various countries. LibreOffice was initially named BrOffice in Brazil.
Oracle announced in April that it was ending its development of OpenOffice. The act of creating The Document Foundation and its LibreOffice project did no demonstrable harm to Oracle's business.
