I was born and raised in Houston, and have only recently relocated to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. So I went into the software business, starting at a small startup that I stayed at for 10 years, clawing my way to middle management, to echo a commercial of that era. My company went public, and I had these things called stock options, so for a brief period of time I was one of those tech paper millionaires. When my company got bought in by one of the largest software companies in the world, I very quickly learned that working for a big company was not for me, so I took the lure of the relatively big bucks as a VP of a much smaller company.
It was the worst professional mistake of my life, but the one good thing that did come out of it is that my dissatisfaction drove me to consider taking a risk on something that those who know me had pushed me to do as long as I can remember, and that was to write. I must admit that I have always enjoyed writing; in fact; I wrote my first novel at 10ish, featuring myself and all of my friends from the street where I lived who almost single-handedly fought off a Soviet invasion.
I recently re-read this magnus opus, and it is interesting to track the course of my friendships with the core group that were the main characters of my novel. Some sort of argument or disagreement would result in the inevitable serious wounding of the friend with whom I quarreled, and depending on how serious it was, they might linger for days, clinging to life before they recovered, but not after suffering excruciating pain.
And the result is Marching With Caesar-Conquest of Gaul, the first in a completed trilogy that is the story of one of the lucky few men who managed to survive and retire, after rising through the ranks of the 10th Legion.

Even knowing the history of the 10th, it was a bitter pill to swallow as it was disbanded and reformed as "The Twins".
I've been around for a few Regimental reformations, and they are never universally celebrated by the troops if at all. Onward to the last? Apr 01, Cathy Deane rated it it was amazing. Monotony Reviews of these books are getting monotonous.
All are well written and draw the reader in. I enjoy the accuracy of events and the climactic events of the battles and forging of the Empire. I truly do not want this series to end.
Mar 07, Manu Dell'aquila rated it really liked it. I find the whole Marching with Caesar series easy to read but a bit boring. The story line is compelling, the dialogues funny, but I am not convinced by the style of writing. They are meant to be written by Titus Pullus as a memoir, but I don't necessarily think that is a good excuse for simplistic writing prose of the whole series. I am however, still compelled to read them all.
Aug 26, David Rygmyr rated it it was amazing. By now, the book's character is a "lifer" and so it's less about being a grunt.
Many plots are described in these books; in the ongoing marches with the legions of Rome. The characters are believable and well written and the writer actually bothered to learn something about the time period he is writing about.
There are a couple of good sub-stories in this book, both including Cleopatra and probably more insightful than the Elizabeth Taylor movie. I'm absolutely enjoying this series.

Other books in the series. Marching With Caesar 1 - 10 of 14 books. Trivia About Marching with Cae In this gripping story, we follow Titus Pullus as he serves in Marcus Antonius' army as it prepares to do battle with the armies of Octavian Caesar.
The author weaves a complicated storyline in which Pullus runs afoul of Cleopatra, who has apparently bewitched Antonius, and Pullus must also deal with the intrigues of Octavian and figure out how to extricate himself from an extraordinarily complex, and to Pullus intolerable, situation. The author pulls all of this off brilliantly, and also manages to give the reader an interesting look at Octavian, Marcus Agrippa, and other famous personages of that critical time in history. As if all of this were not enough, the character development of the numerous main characters in this story continue to develop and hold the reader's interest.
This one kept me up into the early hours of the morning and was an outstanding read. Highly recommended, but start at the beginning of the series! Amazon Customer Kathy Kingsbury Roessler. A really good book. Maybe it should be a 4.
I have almost always found trouble with straight dry just the facts history. Peake's historic novels have given me a good foundation for comprehending a period of history which for me had previously been a jumble of Ceasar's and Roman wars. You can't follow the game without a scorecard and Peake makes a tangled web of history become comprehensible.
The only area in which Peake falls down is the almost complete lack of salacious sex. The individuals of the 2nd oldest profession, soldiers, are notorious for their association with the oldest profession. As every other reviewer here has said; this is a worthy follow-on in this series that continues the great adventures of Titus Pullus of the 10th.
Perhaps a little less action than previous offerings, but then Titus is getting no younger.
It is an excellent account of the turbulent finale of the bitter struggle between Octavian and Marcus Antony and the political shenanigans are presented here in fascinating detail. I thought the end was something of a whimper compared to the rest of the action, but this book is a tribute to the author who has kept us on tenterhooks to find out where our favorite Legionary will finish up.
Presume there will be one more episode in due course. Peake's writing is magnificent. His first person account is a tour de force, the dialogue he ascribes to his characters brings them to life and when a friend of Titus Pullis' dies you are stunned and morn with him.
Many plots are described in these books; in the ongoing marches with the legions of Rome. With complexity, a richness of history, not to mention an acute knowledge of warring in this period, yet his work is never difficult to follow, you just want more That is why I am reading all of his books in this series.
