As a traveler I loved his descriptions of wild and remote locations and experiences, and as a photographer I enjoyed his commentary on the purpose and particular poetry of nature photography.

This is a decent book about one professional photographers life's achievement and his attempt to articulate what he does inwardly when composing pictures. It also contains invaluable technical advice on taking photographs and exposure. Well worth any photographers perusal.

But, it moved quickly into reading like a journal someone keeps. Very random thoughts from Rowell. Dec 03, Jane rated it it was amazing Shelves: Throughly enjoyed this book! Galen Rowell was an amazing climber, photographer, and naturalist. Nov 10, Alan Leonard rated it liked it. A bit too analytical for my tastes from Rowell. It doesn't quite capture the spirit that Rowell's "Mountain Light" captures.
Aug 18, Nicklas Karlsson rated it really liked it Shelves: A must read for new photographers. Even though some parts are not as relevant anymore films and equipment the books is a wonderful way to start seeing the world in another way.

Brenda makes it so clear that good photography is very much an expression of self and that the more aware we become of ourselves in this universe, and the more we are able to bypass our fears and live fully in the moment, the more we will be able to create photographs that speak of that experience. I enjoyed this book. To me the discussion on composition and design is well balanced with the technical aspects. The pretty pictures really help illustrate the discussion points.

Jul 26, Manish Gupta rated it really liked it. Nice approach to creative outdoor photography. A great book both visually and written explaining and showing great ways of composition for a Photographer looking for inspiration. Very much enjoyed it, it is very refreshing reading this.
