Two sessions from the Red Garter club document the modest beginnings of what would become an international sensation.

As Fania's president and chief promoter, Masucci built the label into an empire in the s using the All-Stars as his calling card. In an All-Stars lineup made up of members from the label's top bands sold out the Cheetah nightclub, yielding more live recordings and the film "Our Latin Thing. The recordings were radically different from previous All-Stars projects, which were built around spontaneity and improvisation. These pieces were carefully assembled, based around rhythm tracks recorded by a sextet of instrumentalist All-Stars.

Four players appear on all tracks -- the great pianist Papo Lucca, Nicky Marrero on timbales, Roberto Roena on bongos and percussion and Pacheco on flute, percussion and vocals. The other two parts of the rhythm section were congas, alternately played by Barretto, Santamaria and Johnny Rodriguez, and bass, played by either Bobby Valentin or Sal Cuevas.

The album opens with the beautifully sculpted "Ella Fue She Was the One ," a logical attempt at a crossover hit with its ingenious reference to "Twist and Shout" coming out of the chorus and a great, Santana-influenced guitar solo from Eric Gale. The album's name came about when producer Jay Chattaway asked the rhythm section to record over a click track, which prompted the response "we're our own rhythm machine.

Chattaway was a particularly sensitive arranger for the group.

Montana applied the heavy strings concept so successful for the Salsoul Orchestra to great effect backing Celia Cruz on "Isadora" and Blades on "Prepara," which also featured excellent solos from Lucca and Pacheco. The ambition of this vision resulted in some incredible music but did not realize its commercial goals.

Yet that vision was prophetic given Latino pop's more recent successes; it was an idea what was 20 years ahead of its time.
