Keep up with Mother Nature

Needs a warning about that as well as an x rating. I won't be reading anymore of this series and thats a shame because the storyline its self is good and the characters are likeable. Its a shame such a great story is wasted.

I skipped over so much of this book because I didn't want to read about how so and so stuck a tongue here or there. Leave it to the imagination! One person found this helpful. I wasted an hour hoping the author was using shocking immorality as a poorly chosen lead-in device, but it never did settle in to a decent read. See all 5 reviews.

In the prologue, Jared Diamond summarizes his methodology in one paragraph:. This book employs the comparative method to understand societal collapses to which environmental problems contribute. My previous book Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies , had applied the comparative method to the opposite problem: In the present book focusing on collapses rather than buildups, I compare many past and present societies that differed with respect to environmental fragility, relations with neighbors, political institutions, and other "input" variables postulated to influence a society's stability.

The "output" variables that I examine are collapse or survival, and form of the collapse if collapse does occur. By relating output variables to input variables, I aim to tease out the influence of possible input variables on collapses. Diamond identifies five factors that contribute to collapse: The root problem in all but one of Diamond's factors leading to collapse is overpopulation relative to the practicable as opposed to the ideal theoretical carrying capacity of the environment.

One environmental problem not related to overpopulation is the harmful effect of accidental or intentional introduction of non-native species to a region. Diamond also writes about cultural factors values , such as the apparent reluctance of the Greenland Norse to eat fish. Diamond also states that "it would be absurd to claim that environmental damage must be a major factor in all collapses: It's obviously true that military or economic factors alone may suffice". He also lists twelve environmental problems facing humankind today.

The first eight have historically contributed to the collapse of past societies:. Further, he says four new factors may contribute to the weakening and collapse of present and future societies:. In the last chapter, he discusses environmental problems facing modern societies and addresses objections that are often given to dismiss the importance of environmental problems section "One-liner objections" [4]. In the "Further readings" section, he gives suggestions to people who ask "What can I do as an individual?

In fact, one of the main lesson to be learned from the collapses of the Maya, Anasazi, Easter Islanders, and those other past societies [ Finally, he answers the question, "What are the choices that we must make if we are to succeed, and not to fail? But then orders come through: The men are called to battle in Pennsylvania. Thomas has made it so far Imagine what it would be like to have no say in what happened to you. The Civil War lasted four years and ended in When Abraham Lincoln became president, more and more people in the North were saying that America should not have slavery anywhere.

Already it was illegal in the North. They said it had to be banned in the South, too. Nobody knows exactly how many people died during the Civil War, but historians estimate that it was about , Sadly, slavery has been a fact of human life for thousands of years. The Battle of Gettysburg, decided to take matters into their own hands.

Like them, thousands of slaves from the American South attempted to escape by following the North Star, finding safe harbor on Underground Railroad—a network of people who felt that slavery was wrong, and were willing to offer their homes as safe harbor for slaves escaping to freedom in the North.

The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest in the Civil War. The Confederate Army from the South lost 28, men, more than a third of their army. The Union Army from the North lost 23,, but their army was bigger, and there were more people living in the North. Even so, the battle was devastating to both sides, and is commemorated today with the Gettysburg Memorial in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
