The four and five years suck up the words like vacuums, not saying much at first. Then their brains sort it out and they start putting the sentences together. I wished I had been able to learn a second language at a young age. Maybe Jinx can give me a bit of that language magic. Lord knows I need it. Jinx is an interesting little tale. One thing I liked about it was how it sort of evoked various different folk and fairy tales. Ellwyn's red hood and her travelling through the forest to get to her grandmother obviously evokes Red Riding Hood.
The witches travelling by butter-churn reminded me of Baba Yaga and her mortar and pe Jinx is an interesting little tale. The witches travelling by butter-churn reminded me of Baba Yaga and her mortar and pestle and, conversely, also has interesting parallels in the idea of witches preventing butter from being made. So on and so forth. Another interesting thing was the level of moral ambiguity.
Some of the shades of grey touched on in this book are not always found in adult books, let alone books at this grade level. And, aside from all that, it was a pretty decent adventure story which kept me interested enough to keep reading. But there still felt like there was something missing. Maybe it's because it takes awhile from the story to start.
Not to say that I was ever bored, 'cause I found the early bits with Jinx interesting enough if a bit unbelievable - I mean, it's one thing for the forest or magic to speak to you, but to be able to quickly pick up multiple languages because the book speaks to you? But the biggest thing was that I just never really jived with any of the characters. There were moments but, overall, they were sort of there to fill their roles in the story and never really seemed to amount to more than that.
I'm not sure I'll read a sequel, assuming there is one. It's certainly left open enough for there to be one. I'm not adverse to reading it, per se. I'd even go so far as to say I might recommend it to some people. But I'm just not sure it left enough of an impression that I'll even remember about it in a month or two, let alone a year or more Not bad, not great.
An enjoyable, if not remarkable young fantasy book. It might be really good as a stepping stone for younger readers. Maybe an in between chapter books and middle grade. I don't regret reading it, but doubt that I'll continue the series. This was a fun story about magic, witches, and wizards.
It was an original work that kept me reading late into the night.

While it has a very interesting premise, some good action, and a marvelously evil villain, oh and complex characters who are notoriously difficult to figure out, all of which make for good fantasy, the constant sarcasm and belittling of each other gets REALLY old quickly, and it is only at the very end that the threesome begins to get along. I found this constant carping at each other really off-putting, so that I never really cared for any of the characters, and that, in my opinion, is a fatal flaw. Read this book out loud to my boys. The story is original and enjoyable. Not a good choice for reading out loud however, because the whole book is written as dialogue. Story is about a wizard who takes in a boy without a home and teaches him magic.
The boy has special abilities and in the end learns the very human lesson that what people show us on the outside isn't necessarily what they actually feel on the inside. I can see where a lot of my book discussion kids are going to enjoy this book. It's a fairly complex story, so I think 4th grade and up is good.
I really enjoyed how the book kept me guessing until the end, and I want to read the next one soon. Bought for a penny by the arrogant wizard Simon, Jinx begins his life in the mysterious Urwald as he learns magic and questions the secrets continually lurking in the minds of the powerful magicians he crosses paths with - secrets that lead him and his friends into dangerous encounters.

Jinx will have to make the toughest choices if he hopes to learn where he is to belong in a world that is always hiding things from him I enjoyed some of the characters a lot.
I really only got hooked when meeting the characters at the second half. The setting is a very magical and enchanting place and I was interested in its mysteries. I thought Jinx was a pretty good story, there was adventure, witches, wizards, creatures and an interesting take on a magic quest. There were some nice references to some well known fairy tales but the book isn't a remade fairy tale itself.
There were some slow parts and others that some parents may feel a bit violent for the target audience but I think overall it is a book that will appeal to a wide variety of readers; boys, girls and parents. Orphan meets his destiny, somewhat similar to Harry Potter. Parts of the story were confusing to me. This seems to be the start of a series, so maybe it gets explained later. This book was not one of my favorites.
It involved magic and sometimes caught my attention, but I felt that I got bored of reading it after a while. It took me about a month to finish it because I just wasnt interested. I thought that the story was interesting and engaging, although I wanted the writing to reveal it a bit better. It is written in a very simplistic way, despite the weight of the content.
I liked the characterizations in this. One word to describe this book: Sep 05, Hazel. Jinx was a good start to the series with Wizards, Witches, Trolls, Goblins and more! It was well written but very slow in my opinion. I really liked this. It's obviously written for ease of younger readers I read it because my 8yo did ; but it's easy to ignore that and enjoy the story. I got sucked into this an ignored all my other books ;-. As posted on Zezee with Books. This is a fun story. Of course, it has to involve magic! Also, it must involve a character to whom weird things will happen.
To say the least, the story turned out almost as I thought it would and almost better. Jinx is about an orphan boy who once resided with his stepmother and stepfather until they c As posted on Zezee with Books.
Jinx is about an orphan boy who once resided with his stepmother and stepfather until they chose to get rid of him. However, the stepfather could not find his way back to the path. Luckily, or unluckily, a wizard happened to be about. Jinx goes off to live with the wizard Simon, tidying the house and such. I think her purpose in the story was simply to lure Jinx to Samara and heighten his interest in magic.
Jinx does visit Samara, briefly, but was brought back to the Urwald by Simon. After a little argument it was decided that Simon would teach Jinx magic. Jinx however is not aware that he has magical capabilities. Also, he is deeply connected to the Urwald and can understand the trees by listening to their roots awesomely cool. They quickly become friends. I enjoyed reading Jinx but it was not as great a story as I thought it would be. What threw me off was when Jinx runs off and meets Reven and Elfwyn.
It seemed that I suddenly began reading a different story. The first half of the novel was about Jinx finally finding a home, a place where he was safe and could live in comfort. I began to think that would be all there was to the story or that it might lead to Jinx finding a family with Simon and Sophie. But suddenly it changed. Jinx meets Reven and Elfwyn and off the story went on an adventure, which I did not expect.
I enjoyed reading of the adventure but it seems separate from the first part of the book. Still, Jinx was an okay read and is one I would recommend. The ending gave the impression that another book might follow. If so, I look forward to it. This book is about a boy called Jinx who lives with his horrible stepparents in a hut that's actually his own. His stepfather tries to gat rid of him in the Urwald but Jinx is rescued by a wizard called Simon. I really like this book and I think it's really cool. I would recommend this book to people who li So far its very interesting and intriguing and its really a type of book I'd like so I'm really excited to read it.
A brilliant book for those who like fantasy novels if you like Matt Haig and harry potter your next favourite book IS this!!!: I think that this book had a very brilliant story line that really pulled me in from the very first page. There is a male protagonist called Jinx who had a very hard life in the magical forest of Urwald when both his parents had died. Being abandoned by his stepfather when they strayed the path, they broke the first rule of the Urwald. Never stray from the path. After that day he met very strange encounters that changed his life forever.
I believe that this may be a very good book for thos Jinx, was a really capturing book. The book was about a boy called Jinx that was abandoned by his step dad into the forest. While he was abandoned, he met up with a wizard and that wizard that was called Simon bought jinx and let him be his apprentice and live under his roof. In this time Jinx realised that he had the power to read peoples feelings. But he lost this power because of an incident that happened.
It was a really fun reading it and once I started reading it , Jinx is an amazing all-round book from start to finish. It is one of my favourite books and it will not let you down. It's one of my favourite books of all time. Its about a boy who is being thrown into a dangerous forest who is saved by a wizard from trolls and becomes a powerful wizard.
I recommend this book to absolutely anyone. The book is about a curious young boy called Jinx who is thrown away by his family and a wizard takes him under his wing which has caused Jinx a more satisfying life. My argument is a good one because this book has shown me how much my family is actually worth. This book has made me carry on reading until times such as I wouldn't recommend this book to I thought it was really interesting and eye caching but in the middle of the book it was sort of boring but I just kept reading it because I knew it was going to get better and after about 2 pages it start to get really good again but it got better than I thought it would have got and I really enjoyed it.
I recommend older kids should read it because I was hard to get into the book but if little kids like adventure books it would be perfect. I really like this book because they is a lot of action and they is no part of the book which is boring and I would definitely recommend this book to any one who is thinking about reading it. I thing my book buzzbook was ok because I like books about si fi fantasy so this is my kind of book.
I loved the book as it was really interesting! Jinx has to escape the Bonemaster as he is imprisoned. The book was fantastic as it was thrilling and mademe want to read more.

I would recommend thisto other people who like fantasy. This is a fantastic book because it has very deep meaning to it and also if you like trolls, witches, wizards and wolves then you'll love this book. This book is full of adventures and lots of fun too. Jinx The Wizards Apprentice is a very interesting book. I love Jinx The Wizards Apprentice as it is a very mysterious book full of adventure. Jinx is just a curious little boy who has a knack at finding troublesome situations and it almost seems that he is trying to live up to his name.
Although he can be curious with different situations and aspects of life, he is very people cautious. This book is very easy to fall into and the world plays out almost like a fantasy video game and that is what I liked the best and the middle grade crowd probably will too. It is not to serious and the idea that a little boy just wants to go out and explore is a notion that a lot people not just middle graders can relate too. Jinx is very well-written, Blackwood knows how to engage the reader with the adventures the characters go on and creates distinct characters.
I was very surprised by how Jinx managed to have thought-provoking lines which is not rare when I read MG books. Jinx is an adventurous and curious child who wants to see more of the world and learn more too. Enjoyed his relationship with Simon who is very different and more moody and morose but you could see his affection for Simon. The world is written very well and although quite simplistic, what was written out was done well. I also liked the style of writing - it really helped in creating the overall atmosphere for a fantasy book. I highly recommend this to MG readers, especially those who love fantasy or are curious about fantasy.
Jinx lives with his step-parents in a clearing within the Urwald - a vast forest teeming with nasty creatures and nastier wizards and witches. One day, Jinx's stepfather decides he can no longer support the boy and takes him out into the forest to abandon him. Unfortunately for Jinx's stepfather, they cross paths with Simon, an evil wizard. Simon offers to buy the boy instead and takes him home to do chores for him. He doesn't seem that evil to Jinx, but can he really be trusted?
At first glance you may think that this book is another Harry Potter-ish clone, but while there are similarities, Jinx is quite a different story altogether.
