Coming home allowed her to merge these two sides into a life that allowed the best of both. Both she and Samuel discovered that life does allow for second chances. I did feel that the story ended rather abruptly and would like to see a sequel as there were some sub-plots that never did come to a conclusion. But at this point, I don't believe there has been any follow up story. Overall a good Christmas read. Unless they weigh heavy on your soul--" "There is His admonition to do unto others as you'd wish-- I know the scripture, Mamm--I expect you do.
Most of us know it. The knowing is easy. It's the doing that gives us trouble. Jun 19, Resa rated it really liked it. It was a light, fluffy read full of Christmas spirit, happy endings, and little else. She does an excellent job of exploring the Amish culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch, which gave the novel a little color. Her writing style is very simple which made the book a very quick read and also seemed to mimic the Amish style she was writing about. In fact, I found the family relationship with Annie and the rest of the Weavers more developed and more interesting than the romance developing between Annie and Samuel.
While it is impossible to separate the Amish culture from religion, this is not a religiously dominated book either. Annie just chooses to find her path through God, and Chapman does an excellent job of making that struggle realistic. The plot is fairly simple, and while I loved how Chapman portrayed Annie and Samuel, some of the other characters in the book fell flat and I would have liked just a little more, if not character development, just character rounding out. It might not be a Christmas classic, but it will help you get in the holiday spirit Sep 16, Camille rated it it was amazing Shelves: I will start out by saying, five out of five stars.
I am so glad NetGalley gave me the opportunity to review this book! What a beautiful story this book tells. It's quiet, peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. It's a story of love, it's a story about what Christmas should be about: Annie Weaver has just returned home after she hears of her father's terrible accident in which he broke both of his legs. She has been living with the "English" for the past few years and completed a nursing degree, som I will start out by saying, five out of five stars. She has been living with the "English" for the past few years and completed a nursing degree, something generally not done in the Amish community.
Annie upon returning home realizes she has been so homesick for all of this, for her family, for the simple Christmases that they share, and for that life. So, she decides to stay and to get baptized into the church. Annie helps to care for her father and meets Samuel, the local "doctor" for the area. He is a few years older than her and has suffered the tragedy of losing his wife and daughter in a terrible accident years before.
Samuel feels like he is a damaged man, but he finds himself drawn to Annie anyway. Although Annie has worried about her schooling it is quickly accepted by the community and she is called upon to help her neighbors when Samuel or the midwife cannot make it.
Annie knows she is in the right place where she can practice her profession of choice, but be among her own community. Annie finds herself falling for Samuel, slowly but surely, and wondering if it can work out.
Samuel returns the feelings but feels an obligation to another woman, whom he admittedly does not love. Also, Samuel worries that he is older than her, and that she should be with someone her own age, like the young David he always sees around the Weaver home. Will Annie have the simple Christmas her heart has been yearning for? Will she and Samuel find a way to make it work?
Or does God have another plan in store for them? Read A Simple Amish Christmas to find out. Again, I thought this was a beautiful story. It is no mystery or thriller, but it is beautiful nonetheless. It may be a be predictable but it doesn't really matter because I read this book to focus on what I think the true meaning of Christmas is, love. Love is something that the characters have, and not in short supply. I think that everyone should read this book to focus on the true meaning of Christmas and to focus on how grateful we should be for everything we do have rather than worrying about what we do not have.

And I really hope there is a sequel or two because I'd love to know more about these characters! Now, three years after leaving her family, she is asked to come home as her father has been in a serious accident — both his legs have been broken after a car hit his buggy in a snowstorm. He is perilously ill. On her first night at home she meets up with the local Amish farmer Samuel Yoder he is medically trained and gives aid to the community.
He remembers the flibberty gibbet she use to be and questions both her ability to care for her dad and her commitment to the community. Samuel is a widower and the loss of his wife and baby eight years ago has stolen his youth and his passion for life. Now Annie is home and once again living the simple life she knows she never wants to leave.
She just needs to figure out how to use her training for the good of the community. In the days leading up to Christmas Samuel realises what an asset to the community Annie will be as they work together ministering to the sick.
Is there any way he can convince her to stay? Should Annie follow her heart? Both Samuel and Annie seek the will of God and accept the advice of family and friends.

A well-written and researched debut inspirational novel, it has realistic main characters and a very good story that just sucked me in from page one. I do hope that there will be more stories from this wonderful community. Author, Vannetta Chapman, says she is writing more Amish romances, as well as mysteries and Christian historical, so hope to read a lot more of her work in the future.
Jan 23, Kara rated it really liked it. I have read several books by this wonderful author and each story holds something very precious and unique…. A Simple Amish Christmas was also a wonderful experience for me. From the first page, this book caught my attention and I was eager to see what happened next.
Annie is being sent to live with her aunt during the time of her rumschpringe. However, instead of being spontaneous and having crazy fun with the Englischers, she puts herself through medical training and becomes a nurse. She become I have read several books by this wonderful author and each story holds something very precious and unique….
She becomes desperately homesick and when attending her patients one Christmas season, she is called home by her parents to help her injured father. Samuel is such a great character and once he and Annie finally click they make such a great team together. He gets her; her heart, her fears, her humor, and her devotion to God, family, and their Amish neighbors. After his time of solitude, being with Annie and her close family brings life back to Samuel. The chemistry and sparks between them are fun, the romance is sweet, and their connection is tangible.
One of my favorite scenes is when Annie is baptized into the Amish church, I felt how precious and symbolic it was of her faith. The other scenes I utterly enjoyed are Annie with her family, her conversations with her mamm, and how she works with her neighbor patients. She is so in tune with her patients, she has a special touch with each of them regardless of the situation or background, and she brings professionalism and hope with each person.
Even though this book takes place during Christmas, it was a refreshing read and kept me cooled off during the summer heat. Oct 02, Laura rated it really liked it. Annie drops everything and rushes home to care for her dad. His best friend is her father, and while Samuel is attracted to her, the age difference between them causes him to hesitate. But will it be too long, to lose her to a man closer to her own age? And will Annie find her place in the Amish world again?
I really enjoyed getting to know Annie and Samuel and learning about the community they live in. Annie is a realistic heroine, but I was a little surprised at how easily she gave up her job at the hospital. I was also a little confused because the prologue indicates she was sent away unwillingly, but later it says that she went away.
There were also portions of the book that encouraged skimming. Still, this was an excellent debut novel and I would look for more by this author. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book, making it ideal for discussion groups. And he watched Annie care for her dad, Samuel realized she did have the skills to properly care for him, but would the community and church accept her because of her college degree? I love Amish fiction and getting to know new authors, and Vannetta Chapman is a new author for me.

This was a good read. Chapman did a good job of fleshing out her characters and making them likeable. I will miss reading about Annie and Samuel. I wasn't surprised in the least when Annie immediately gave up her job and returned home when she heard of her father's accident and that she was needed. I laughed and laughed at how Samuel treated her Once the reader understands what is happening between Annie and Samuel, it's easy to see why they both resist their feelings.
And of course, there's another suiter to take into consideration, who Annie seems pretty fond of. Which one will Annie choose? I'm continually amazed at how easily it is to picture what's going on in my mind. And whether or not she's writing about Annie and Samuel I don't want to give away anything else, so I'll let you read the book for yourself.
