A Marine to Remember (Book 1: Semper Fi in Love Series)

Great author, great story, great writing. Griffin is one of the all time greats in this genre adn fortunately a prolific author without resorting to cookie cutter plots, characters and stories.

He moves on to a new type of story once one has run it's course which I really appreciate. His writing and stories stay fresh all the time. I have enjoyed him for years. My first Griffin read, and I dearly wanted to find his books on at least a four scale, not the 2 to 3 scale where I rate it. This is just a story about a marine, one with a highly unlikely story to boot. There is no complexity to the story, no interwoven stories that mesh toward the end, just a step ladder from one part of the main characters life in the Marine.

Now, there's nothing wrong with that, but nothing exceptional either, like the writing, just ordinary. There were a few glaring lapses My first Griffin read, and I dearly wanted to find his books on at least a four scale, not the 2 to 3 scale where I rate it. There were a few glaring lapses as I saw it, for instance. When marching in review the star does an eye's right and spots his mother and father in the reviewing stands.

But when they are dismissed no further mention of them is written, which seemed quite strange as he was at odds with his parents. There were other cases when one event was separated from the next by just leaving it for the reader to fill in the blanks for himself. Opportunities missed by the author. I will continue to read a few more, though I expect they will be the same genre. Reminded me of Jeffrey Archer's Clifton Chronicles.

Dec 04, Matt rated it it was amazing. This is the first book by Griffin I have read. A very good writer and storyteller. I saw Matt Damon as I read this novel. Dec 05, Justin Roberts rated it really liked it. This is my review of the whole series, not just for Semper Fi. Just like most books by Griffin, it has almost exactly the same romance theme.

It felt as though the main protagonists always seemed to be adored or followed around by virgins, prostitutes, young widows, or cougars. I didn't like the fact that some characters very easily rose through the ranks just because he did some errands for people in high places.

One Private got promoted to Sergeant, just by literally, I mean literally, wiping h This is my review of the whole series, not just for Semper Fi. One Private got promoted to Sergeant, just by literally, I mean literally, wiping his boss's ass! He then became a Lieutenant just after just a single mission in which he gave minimum contribution! Sep 04, Ron Hartley rated it liked it. Griffin is an excellent writer when it comes to Historical Fiction. His books are more character driven than action driven. Sad to say, he does use some profanity, but it doesn't seem to be for shock value like some authors do.

These are military men in dangerous situations and occasional bad language comes out their mouths. Like most of his main characters, in the first book the hero bounces from woman to woman until he meets his one true love and becomes a one woman man. The conversations are cr Griffin is an excellent writer when it comes to Historical Fiction. The conversations are crisp, they move the story along and there is always a bit of humor. The background and secondary characters come across as important and not just to be an ''expendable crew man". Oct 24, Jake Kline rated it it was amazing. Surprisingly enough, though WEB Griffin is a prolific author, with more than 6 major series and books under a variety of pseudonyms , The Corps series is the only one I ever really got into.

The characters somehow got under my skin and I couldn't help but empathize with them when they got into trouble or were in danger of being killed. This was an excellent book and a great introduction to one of my favorite series of all time. Mar 12, Bunny Maurer rated it really liked it. But most of the characters are rich except the main character and they all fall in love a minute after meeting and go to bed in 2 minutes after meeting.

This is a series of 5 books and I'm going to read all five but jump over the sophmoric love interests. Feb 13, Michael Flores rated it really liked it. Entertaining and technical read. Formulaic and troubled heroes, but likeable as they fight through daunting odds to achieve freedom. Dec 30, J. Thompson rated it it was amazing. This was the first book I read by this author. I am a Marine Veteran and found it very entertaining.

His writing style hooked me and I have read every book he has published. I read this one many years ago. Sep 12, Jim A rated it it was amazing. A re-read for me. I first read this maybe years ago. Jul 09, Lee Franke rated it really liked it. Best book in the series. Really starts the entire series off on the right foot. Very few books have done this to me. My father served in WW2. Editorial Reviews

I was totally hooked! The story does move the focus more to the Marines and drops one of the supporting characters of the previous books, but that only serves to make the cast more manageable. I LOVE some of these characters! Over 20 years this is the 3rd time reading this series. The familiar characters are back to fight off the latest threat to the Commonwealth and the safety of Avalon.

The characterizations in this novel are first-rate and the storyline moves at a deliberate and fast pace serving to make this novel a true page-turner. Griffin plainly has a very solid understanding of life in the USMC, and this imparts an unmistakable aura of authenticity to the novel. And he manages to create many memorable characters who obviously will populate the many sequels. This is first-rate military fiction that no reader who likes the genre will want to miss. I love these books that are not co-authored by someone else.

Griffin is always an amazing writer and I come back to these and the Brotherhood of War series like I am seeing old friends once again. I have hard it in hard cover; paperback and now Kindle because you cannot take the "books" everywhere with you. The characters are well done as are the various story lines.

I just wish they weren't so expensive Get a notebook and keep track of the characters that appear in "Semper Fi"; many reappear throughout "The Corps" series - a few notes along the way will keep you from getting lost as you progress through each of the books in the series - this is crucial if you do not plan to read each book in order one right after the other. These are the principal characters to get to know early on. It is largely through these four characters that the entire series unfolds. Having read through this series twice now, I highly recommend it as both good reading and an opportunity to combine good fiction with historical fact hint: Enjoy "Semper Fi" and the entire "Corps" series, but plan to lose some sleep-time; each book is a page-turner!

I feel it is setting up a Volume one in the series and it reads like it. I feel it is setting up a cast of characters for future volumes. Great fun and it's nice to catch up with what is happening in the series at large again. Apr 21, Les rated it really liked it. The Empire's Corp never fails to entertain, this episode concentrates Stalkers stalkers and their pre--emptive defence of Avalon against rogue ex-empire forces, sent light years away with little support a small cadre of marines have to buy time against a highly organised and well trained foe, using guerrilla tactics the insurgents find themselves having to compromise their moral code for the greater good, another fast moving exciting story from Chris, keep up the good work.

Mar 19, Andrew Rose rated it really liked it. A lesson in insurrection. Landing a force to attempt to encourage a worldwide uprising, the Marines play a desperate gambit to save their Commonwealth before it can be wiped out. Mar 21, Matt rated it did not like it Shelves: I liked the story in this book, like the ones before, but the right wing rubbish written at the start of each chapter completely ruined the book.

It was bad in other books but never to the extent it was here. It took you out of the story, it made you identify less with the characters and sadly it means that I won't be reading the rest of the series. Mar 11, Karen Vile rated it really liked it.

I disagree; the themes he works into high science fantasy are important and his frameworks serves them well. Sep 04, Audra L Moore rated it really liked it. Very good Good story. But you may also wish to remember the parable of the cooked frog. When dropped into boiling water, the frog jumped out and fled — scalded, but alive; when dropped into a slowly heating pot, the frog stayed put until it was too late. And the cook had boiled frog for dinner.

It is rare for freedoms to be lost overnight. Instead, they are traded away, piece by piece, until it is too late. The justifications will vary — guns will be banned on grounds of public safety, for example, while drugs will be banned on grounds of personal health — yet the underlying motive will remain the same.
