Lorcan and Darcy are my two favorite characters, so there wasn't enough of them in this story. So I will ignore yet another cliffhanger ending and wish the Tempest twins and their friends well, as I leave them. Although not without flaws, Tide of Terror is a marked improvement on it's precursor. The fact that it is twice the length has given Somper the space that he needed to develop the human characters of his novel, giving them all far more depth of character than they displayed in Demons of the Ocean.
Grace, in particular, gets to do a lot more this time round which was really nice to read. However, the novel is noticeably padded out in the middle. Although the action is better spaced throughout the Although not without flaws, Tide of Terror is a marked improvement on it's precursor. Although the action is better spaced throughout the story, there are lengthy chapters which serve little purpose other than to describe Connor's school day yes, there is a Pirate School in this one and it's every bit as ridiculous as that sounds.
Additionally, the Vampirates feel a bit superfluous to the story this time as they do very little within the novel.
There is a definite feel that they will be more significant in the next book, but don't read this one if you're wanting a horror story. There is far more swashbuckling than blood sucking in this novel. You know what I said after I finished reading the first book? That might not happen. There were parts of this book that I honestly enjoyed, but then there were others where I just wanted to put the book down and forget about it.
If there's one thing I enjoy is the diversity in the book and even the story is interesting, and it's written well and in simple ways. But then there's the twins I just can't see them as teenagers. Can't really see them as adults You know what I said after I finished reading the first book? Can't really see them as adults either; it's like the writer was kind of confused about how to write real teenagers and just wrote them sometimes as teens and others as adults.
Kind of hard to read a book when you can't really grow fond of the main characters In the end, what I can say about this series is that it is a nice one, with an interesting story, if sometimes a bit confusing like the whole being in the s, which seems a lot more like the s, or maybe earlier and then there's the mixing of magic for no reason, like having visions.
Not sure I'll be reading the rest When Connor's good friend Jez is killed because of a pirate seeking revenge on Captain Molucco Wrathe, Grace becomes extremely concerned for Connor's safety. When the option for going to Pirate Academy comes up she immeadiately attempts to take both herself and Connor there in the hopes that he will want to stay there and receive proper training.
As Connor begins to like the Academy more and more, Grace begins having her own dangerous journey. One that involves the Vampirates. With Grace attempt When Connor's good friend Jez is killed because of a pirate seeking revenge on Captain Molucco Wrathe, Grace becomes extremely concerned for Connor's safety. With Grace attempting to get back on the Vampirate ship and convincing Connor to remain at the Academy, it seems as if everything is up to her to fix it. She only then realizes that they each have a different and dangerous journey to take.
Not as good as the first but a good way to reveal Grace's connection with the Vampirates and Connor's love for piracy. I do believe it is more of a bridge story between the first and third book though. Can't wait to read the next in the series. I have to admit that this series keeps me interested. Maybe it is the mix of supernatural with futuristic scifi written as a historical sea tale?
It is such a weird premise. I hope that as the books continue the author will give more description of how the world came to be mostly ocean and how the future society reverted back to sail boats. I would describe this book as a place holder. The author gets excited about describing all the amazing things that happen at the pirate academy. It is obvious I have to admit that this series keeps me interested. It is obvious he loves the school and its detailed description takes away from the overall mysteries. I understand that the visit at the academy allows the characters time to grow up and decide their future paths, but the action at the end felt rushed and forced in comparison.
But, I really like Conner and Grace and want to know what happens next! There are some odd character developments with Grace, but without these developments, I'd have been disappointed at not seeing the Vampirates at all! Sidorio also plays a key role in this novel as the plot develops further. I really enjoy these vampirate books This one is even more exciting than the first. The Tide of Terror really doesn't start 'till the climax of this novel, but things are building up for a big bang at the end!
I look forward to the next novel about swashbuckling blood suckers! Twins Connor and Grace are on board the Diablo, a pirate ship, where Connor is perfectly content learning on the job, as it were, to be a pirate. But Grace has disturbing dream-visions where she is transported back onto the Vampirate Ship that first rescued her in the earlier book , and sees a vision of her friend Lorcan in trouble there. When a pirate attack on the Diablo kills Connor's friend, Grace is worried for the safety of her brother, and so she's happy when the two siblings are sent of Twins Connor and Grace are on board the Diablo, a pirate ship, where Connor is perfectly content learning on the job, as it were, to be a pirate.
When a pirate attack on the Diablo kills Connor's friend, Grace is worried for the safety of her brother, and so she's happy when the two siblings are sent off to Pirate Academy to see if it's to their liking. There is lots of intrigue among the teachers and pirate battle action, swashbuckling goodness with some vampirical stuff too. Rather interesting to think of a school for pirates.
I didn't enjoy the 2nd book as much as I did the first. It had some exciting parts to it but seemed to be more of a build up to what the 3rd book might bring. In this book the twins are reunited. Conner is content on his ship but Grace misses the Vampirate ship and also fears for her brother's life being a pirate.
She talks Conner into going to the Pirate Academy for a week. Conner falls in love with the school. Grace is still trying to come to amends on being away from the Vampirates. There is I didn't enjoy the 2nd book as much as I did the first. There is more to come but don't want to ruin it for you. Still an enjoyable book and I recommend it if you like the first. Hope the 3rd book is much better. This series of books is entertaining but frustrating at the same time. It took a long time for something dramatic to happen. Then other issues were brought up just as the book ended.
The author definitely made it so a reader has to go to the book to find out answers. The separate storylines for the twins is interesting. They are together in this book but they never quite combine together. It shows how they are both going on different paths, while they struggle to stay together. I will be getting This series of books is entertaining but frustrating at the same time. I will be getting the next volume to see what happens. While fun at first, it becomes much darker as both twins are pulled into intrigue and plots.
Meanwhile, Sidorio is trying to form his own band of Vampirates among exiles from the Vampirate crew. Pirate Academy sounds like an awesome experience. The second book in the Vampirates series continues the saga of the Tempest twins reunited at last on The Diablo. Connor is settling down happily to the life of a pirate, while Grace worries about his safety.
When one of Connor's friends dies in a fight Grace and Cheng Li convince Connor to attend the Pirate Academy; but is everything there as it seems? Grace continues trying to return to Lorcan and the Vampirates. Will either of the twins survive against their growing list of enemies?
I liked when things would get rocky and then I would have to stop reading, and I couldn't wait to read it again. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. My year-old is still loving it and thinks the Captain is the Twin's dad. Is that really the story that we want to send out to middle school boys? He even has visions of being a captain in the future. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Like who is their mother and why does Captain Vampirate know stuff about their father?
Yes, I'm in the middle of reading it- half way done on the second day of reading it- I like it lot so far Kind of at a slightly boring part Not that it's boring, just not as exciting. Personally, not as good as the first book- but I still like it The middle is okay, but compared to the rest of the action, it wasn't as exciting. The back is full of surprises Not much of a review,: Another swash-buckling adventure for Grace and Connor Tempest as they searched for the path that each of them was destined to travel. This time, most of the action took place at the Pirate Academy where all was not what it seemed and friends and foes were sometimes difficult to distinguish between.
There was plenty of intrigue, betrayal, danger, fun and tests of loyalty. It will be interesting to see just where the siblings' chosen paths take them in the next installment. This one wasn't as good as the 1st one, I thought. I mean, Sidorio turns Jez into a vampirate, and they eat a couple girls that was creepy-cool and Grace is having delusions of grandeur and talking to Lorcan through astral projection and crap. But I found the chapters that had to do with Grace and Conner at school to be rather tedious. Grace has a lot of action, where as Connor is learning how to tie knots and fight better with swords.
Mar 31, Wolf Alpha rated it it was amazing Shelves: I really liked this book. I hate how Sidorio made a crew for himself and how he is planning on wiping the other Vampirates out. I like how Connor wants to take a break from the pirates and go to the Pirate Academy. I like how she finds the Vampirates again and how the two of them stay with the people who saved them. Feb 22, Khris rated it really liked it. Took me a while to read it because I wasn't reading everyday and sometimes lost interest. Still a pretty good book. Tide of Terror, the second book in the Vampirates series is a thrilling ride full a more pirates, action, adventure, betrayals, and more!
For me, it was fast paced. Best of all, there was a little more about the vampirates although I would have liked to see more and that is what the sequels are for. Connor and Grace were together for the most part in this book, but you can see that they are destined for different paths. Connor wants to be a pirate. In fact, he excels at everything pirate relate Tide of Terror, the second book in the Vampirates series is a thrilling ride full a more pirates, action, adventure, betrayals, and more!
In fact, he excels at everything pirate related. He even has visions of being a captain in the future. Grace, on the other hand, longs for the Vampirate ship and Lorcan, her vampirate friend. That being said, she does some pretty crazy things to try to get back on the ship. From jumping into the harbor to taking "spirit journeys" to visit the ship. From Connor's visions to Grace's "spirit journeys," I am curious to discover if the twins have some sort of special powers that they are not aware of. The only parts I didn't like were the few parts where I was like "Wow, that's lame.
I didn't think it was necessary, but then I remembered that Connor is only fourteen, so I guess it's okay. Anyways, I can't wait to see where Justin Somper takes the story next. Tide of Terror was a fun book to read. It was a quick read that was just fun. I love the mystery the Vampirates present. I look forward to finding out more about the mysterious captain of the Vampirate ship.
I want to know why he wears a mask, and who exactly is behind the mask. Aug 31, Zack Zocchi rated it really liked it. Twins Connor and Grace have been reunited after their separation, and are both staying on The Diablo, but after a turn of events Grace worries for Connors safety and asks him to take a visit to the Pirate Academy. The Academy is not like any other school, and Connor loves it; however, Grace is no longer enjoying it.
Connor is considering becoming a full time student while Grace is trying to get back on the vampirate ship. All the while more people are leaving the Vampirate ship, and Sidorio is m Twins Connor and Grace have been reunited after their separation, and are both staying on The Diablo, but after a turn of events Grace worries for Connors safety and asks him to take a visit to the Pirate Academy.
All the while more people are leaving the Vampirate ship, and Sidorio is making deadly plans. I chose to read this book after the first book "Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean" got me hooked. These books leave you wanting more after every chapter, and keeps you on the edge of your seat! The plot twists in this book were incredible, and I loved every one of them.
The conflicts in it are also very interesting and really get you into the story. The setting in these books however is a bit confusing. It is set in the future after a flood covers most of the earth, forcing mankind to revert to older technology. Not all technology is lost, which makes it a bit confusing. My overall impression of this book is very good. I really enjoy the action packed adventure, and intensity it brings. I think just about anybody could read this book along with the rest of the series. It has romance and love, and action and adventure. It is probably more interesting to younger audiences though.
There is not too much to worry about as far as offensive material, just violence, blood, and consumption of alcohol all part of the pirate life. Sep 17, Coco Pacheco rated it it was amazing. Many other important characters come in to play throughout the series, but in this book the story is centered around Connor and Grace. The majority of the book takes place at the Pirate Academy, which essentially is boot camp for pirates.
This is a classic tale of how perserverence and hard work will eventually pay off. Grace and Connor who belong to different ships from the previous book, Grace is with the vampirate ship and Connor the pirate ship, come together and enroll in the Pirate Academy. There they learn how to properly handle rapiers, blunderbusts, and other pirate tool essentials.
They then end up having to use their newly learn skills unexpectedly by ditching the academy to aid their fellow ship and crew. Personally, I loved this book along with the previous book and cant wait to read the rest of the sequels. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. May 05, Indee rated it it was amazing. Tide of Terror is the 2nd book in the Vampirates series. It follows the story of twins Grace and Connor Tempest after they are united at the end of Vampirates: The Vampirates series takes place in the year , in the future when massive floods due to global warming?
I really love this book! Could not put it down! This story starts at first on the Diablo and then continues on to the Pirate Academy, with some "trips" to the Vampirate shi Vampirates: This story starts at first on the Diablo and then continues on to the Pirate Academy, with some "trips" to the Vampirate ship. I know some say that this one is more about Connor, but I disagree. There is a lot going on with Grace, as much as Connor, but I do not want to give any spoilers! During their visit to the Pirate Academy the author gives an idea of the Pirate Federation and how it is a global network.
I am excited to read, in the next books, the kind of role the Pirate Federation will play. Overall, there is a good balance between both twins in this book. You really get to know where Grace's heart and where Connor's allegiance lies. An absolutely exciting and fun read. Started on the 3rd book Vampirates: Really love this series so far!
Mar 27, Tayler Carpenter rated it it was amazing. Personal Response I really enjoyed how immersive the book got at times.

Connor didn't believe that he was seeing Jez. Connor and the crew killed Sidorio and Jez Someone interested in Vampires and Pirates would like this book. Anybody that likes stories about kids who lost their parent would like this too. Mar 08, gina rated it it was amazing Shelves: I felt the pace was a lot faster than the first book.
The character development with those at the Academy took me by surprise and I'm eager to see how everyone continues to evolve in the other books!
I notice that people seem to either hate or love this book in their reviews. But isn't that good? I personally like the change and appreciate seeing something different from authors when I pick up the next book in their series. I'd love to read a lot more about Lorcan and Grace in the next one. I would have liked more of them together in this book: It was a little slow going at first, because we had to back track and make sure we knew where we are at in the story which is a good idea if it's been a while since you've read the first book.
The character development is slow, but it's interesting to see how the characters handle what is thrown at them in this book. The first book was better, but I am looking forward to what the third book Blood Captain has in store. Jul 19, Nikki rated it did not like it Recommends it for: Anyone interested in reading about a series of half-developed ideas.
This is just a testament to the fact that I lack the ability to choose a book by its cover. I hated the book and have a hard time believing anyone could become engaged in its story if you could call it a story. View all 4 comments. Jul 10, Dwain Smith rated it did not like it. This may be one of the worst things I've ever read. The pirates don't really do pirate things and the vampires don't do vampire stuff. I realize this is supposed to be geared toward "young adults" but it is overly saccharine and trite. If for some reason you are looking for a good vampirate story I'm sure there's at least one other person out there , check out Image's Sea of Red instead.
Jan 20, Abbie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Apr 30, Genevieve rated it liked it Recommended to Genevieve by: It was hard to get through because my favorite character was barely there but the last chapter made up for it. I stopped reading it for a while because I misplaced it but just read the last 50 pages or so in one go. Oct 21, Cosmogypsy Gypsy rated it did not like it. For whatever reason, I just couldn't get into this book.
Jan 24, Sagar Shripal added it. I really just want to read this book online..! Jun 17, Finnessa rated it it was ok Shelves: This is a review for the first and second book. So the first one was ok, maybe two and half stars. To make things easy, I'll do a pros and cons list. Can't deny that dark hair, blue eyes and Irish accents are some of my weaknesses. Honestly, I'm having trouble coming up with more. I guess the author wanted to appeal to younger people by making the dialogue modern, but it really didn't work.
Pirates and "cool, buddy" don't float my boat. I felt that anyone could have written this. She's supposed to be smart, but that must just apply to her vocabulary and not common sense. If she'd just listened to Lorcan and stayed in her cabin, things would have turned out much better. And her lack of seeing the bigger picture and asking the right questions is so annoying. For some reason there are random Chinese people hanging around Australia. I know that those countries are kinda close, but we're given no explanation for why there is such diversity in the crew.
Yeah, she came from the Academy and isn't a part of the original crew, but it seemed out of place. As a side note, I thought Bart was in his forties. At least, that's how he came across in the dialogue. Apparently there was a flood that set them back centuries, sort of. But that explanation comes in book two, I think. The book would have been much better had it been set in the mid s or early s. You can still have the weight of living forever being an issue too, since Sid was involved with Caesar.
If this one thing had been changed and the modern dialogue it would have worked so much better. The author gave me no reason to like them, pirates or vampires. I don't care what happens to them and the overall plot is pretty meh. Here's my theory for the series: Grace and Lorcan get together. She probably gets turned into a vampire or gets special powers. Connor becomes the captain of The Diablo or starts his own pirate corporation.
They beat Sid and his cronies. Someone they meet is actually their mother, drama drama, and everyone lives happily ever after. I really don't care enough to find out if I'm right. Oh, and Connor and Grace end up forging friendships between the two ships' crews and they all sail into the sunset, looking for destiny and booty. In the library it's YA, but juvenile is more appropriate. It's not that fat, but it seemed to drag on into oblivion and beyond.
Would not recommend it. If you want a story about vampires, read the Vampire Plagues trilogy by Sebastian Rook. Shorter, period appropriate and love triangle free. As for book two, I didn't even finish it. Read the first two chapters and skimmed the rest.
