Great read for children. There should be four baby birds in the nest, but Momma bird only sees three when she returns home to feed them. There should be more, she tells herself. The naughty birds try to convince their mom that she only has three hungry little ones so that they will get more food.

Their dad notices something is wrong when he arrives. He wants to know what the trio is hiding behind their backs, but the little birds pretend there is nothing there. Daddy bird does not believe them and makes a fuss. He spots the fourth one just in time as mom brings more food for her greedy little family. Little Bird Lost is a book for the pre-schoolers age group. Kate Larkinson pens a nice rhyming tale inspired by the cute photos of birds in their nest, taken by Steve Larkinson. These nature photos will give readers the opportunity to see how a family of birds looks in their nest.

This short story teaches children simple addition and subtraction as they learn to count the numbers one to four and know the difference between left and right. There is also a website address where teachers and parents can download free educational materials relating to this book and other resources. Readers will find the lovely cover illustration eye-catching too.

The words match the pictures perfectly and have a lovely humour and gentleness. There is a good message about parental love and security along with the educational element about birds protecting and nurturing their young.

The story is told in rhyme which young children will love and the pictures will enable lots of discussions about nature and birds too. A clever, unique and special book for young children.

This is a delightful story, simple yet succinct, and told in rhyme by Kate Larkinson. It is also quite refreshing to see accompanying photographs rather than illustrations, which really makes the story seem plausible and real to life. The simplicity of the story is endearing and will appeal to early readers, but would also be delightful for a parent to read to a child and enable the parent to expand on further discussion such as the importance of family and supporting one another.

It would be a great prelude to going outside and looking at the birds in the garden. There is also a short interactive session at the end which makes a nice addition to follow on from the story. I think that this is a great bedtime story and early first reader, but I have to confess to being the author so I'm a bit biased! The little birds have been very naughty and are told off, but at the end of the day all is well. They eat, get tired and it finishes with them resting. The inspiration for this story was the birds themselves; a family of swallows that my photographer husband just happened to spot.

Rather than ignoring the weakest bird as in survival of the fittest the parent rooted him out of the back of the nest to bring him up to the front to be fed. It was a beautiful experience and one that we wanted to share, so I eventually got round to assembling the key photos and added the words in rhyming couplets.

Little Bird Lost is a literary labor of love brought on by a lucky encounter. Steve Larkinson happened upon a nest with some baby birds and was able to capture some winning photos of a mother and father bird caring for their little ones. Inspired by these photos, Kate Larkinson penned a lovely poem which is perfectly paired in this wonderful little book.

I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway. Little Bird Lost is a delightful book. The pictures and words tell a sweet story that captures the imagination of both the reader and the listener. The text is simple enough for a new reader to tackle, and the rhythm of the book remains consistent through-out. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the lack of consistent punctuation.

The author uses question marks and exclamation marks, but she doesn't use periods. This isn't re I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway. This isn't really a big deal except that it could create a bit of confusion for beginner readers. All in all, a lovely story that I'll use for my library storytime. I've just read this beautiful little book, and been amazed by its incredible photographs. The rhyming couplets that tell the warm story of four bird chicks in a nest are ideal for reading out aloud to preschoolers, and provide just the right degree of humour to keep the adult reader amused too.

Little ones are sure to enjoy counting these cute, cheeky chicks, and they will no doubt ask for this sweet, yet humorous, tale to be read out to them repeatedly! So glad I found this little lost bird, and his nest mates!

Having six grandkids, ages , I have read more than my fair share of picture books! I have been the Gramma to read to preschool classes over the years, so have perfected my 'voices' for the characters. Reading this precious story, 'Little Bird Lost', the tiny birdies came to life in my mind, so I cannot wait to read it aloud to an eager group of little kids who will believe each and every word.

I loved it, the kids adored it - we have story books with animals' drawings and books with animals' photos but no story. This one has both! I'm getting my Mom to have a look as she loves watching birds. The pictures are wonderful, you can really see the birds closely, their little beaks wide open. My kids could actually sort of guess the story.

And we really enjoyed the rhymes too. Thank you Kate and Steve for putting this book out as a story and not keep it just for you as a few cute pictures. Sep 28, Maryann mayton rated it it was amazing. I have fallen head over heals for this story book. We used to kinds of birds and other animals when I was growing up. It was best time my life spending it watching them. This book is being put on my littles ones story time. I can not thank you so much for the chance to be able to read this book.

We all loved it here.

I was given a free copy to give my honest opinion and thank you so much for the amazing chance. I agree, making the ghosts scared diminishes the effect.

Can't wait to share this tome with my nephew in a few years! Of course, by then books won't exist and all media will be consumed through tablet and all media will consist of Miley Cyrus twerking. August 27, at 2: Oh my god, this book scared me so much as a little kid. Though I do agree with you on the "In a dark dark room" story, I will say that as a 5-year old, it did really scare me. Probably because it was basically a jump-scare. March 13, at 1: Thanks for reading, Isabella! I hate my friends who treat dreams like an unfortunate symptom of youth that need to be outgrown.
