Even though the lake shore routing is nice we checked it out , we like the out in the country feeling a little more. Set out on a gorgeous fall day and enjoyed the scenery, but not for very long. The good news is that the roads are excellent out here, so I rode back on those. Passed almost no other trail users and the tree canopy is lovely. Would like to ride this again but definitely suggest you take a hybrid bike! This trail was closed in September by the Wisconsin DNR, due to mudslides and other trail conditions caused by heavy rains. Unfortunately it rained heavily all morning, so our ride south was nearly all in inches of water.

Coming back later in the day, the puddles were mostly gone thanks to sandy soil. Other than skirting the town of Trempealeau, the view is nearly all Mississippi backwaters, restful and boring. We hoped to see migratory birds but were too early. Also, there are no bathrooms or businesses north of the town of Trempealeau. The Sparta trailhead has good bathrooms and a helpful lady in the Chamber of Commerce office in the former depot. We liked the mix of farmland and small towns recommend West Salem for lunch , nearly level trail, decent trail surface of crushed limestone, and train activity parallel to the trail We didn't like the constant traffic noise from Interstate 90, mostly at a distance but crosses over several times.
