Brianna "Bree" Justice has one goal: To get there, she is following Miss Delicious' recipe. Bree had it in the bag until new kid Jasmine Moon decided to give her a little competition.
When Jasmine's campaign starts to impact her friendships, Bree decides to change her tactics. Will she stick to the recipe or put her presidency and cooking empire at risk? This novel is fantastic. Their personalities complement each other as well as clashes, like all real-life friendships or rivalries, and the novel showcases the importance of relationships, even for fifth graders.
Readers will feel the emotions Brianna feels as she experiences pride, guilt, envy, and humility. They will understand Brianna completely. Winston even manages to break down the importance of philanthropy, introducing this topic to readers likely for the first time.
I thought the jealousy and competition could have been conveyed without taking it to the level of "mean girls. Will Brianna be able to stick to her plan of working with her friends to win the election fairly? Or will she jump at the opportunity to steal votes from Jasmine by revealing an embarrassing secret? This hilarious, heartfelt novel will appeal to any reader with big dreams, and the determination to achieve them.

A story about friendship, family, and finding your voice by the author of President of the Whole Sixth Grade For ten-year-old Cadence Jolly, birthdays are a constant reminder of all that has changed since her mother skipped town with dreams of becoming a singing star.
Cadence inherited that musical soul, she can't deny it, but otherwise she couldn't be more different -- she's shy as can be. She did make a promise last year that she would try to break out of her shell, just a little.
And she prayed that she'd get the courage to do it. As her eleventh birthday draws near, she realizes time is running out.
And when a secret recording of her singing leaks and catches the attention of her whole church, she needs to decide what's better: In a story filled with whimsy and hope, Sherri Winston inspires readers to embrace the voice within. In this Newbery Honor novel, New York Times bestselling author Rita Williams-Garcia tells the story of three sisters who travel to Oakland, California, in to meet the mother who abandoned them.
Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade. A fifth grade class, repelled by the overweight new student who has serious home problems, finally learns to accept her. Kayla Dean, junior feminist and future journalist, is about the break the story of a lifetime. She is auditioning for the Lady Lions dance team to prove they discriminate against the not-so-well endowed. But when she makes the team, her best friend and fellow feminist, Rosalie, is not happy.

See all 3 questions about President of the Whole Fifth Grade…. There is plenty in this book that I found to like. Young Brianna Justice has a plan. Uncle Darnell comes home from Vietnam, but he's not the same. I did roll my eyes a bit at the inclusion of recipes, but at least they were relevant to the story and those cupcakes did sound delicious.
Soon Kayla is forced to challenge her views, coming to terms with who she is and what girl power really means.
