Radiation accidents are rare. They are often complex in nature and usually distressing to both the patient and involved medical staff. There are few if any comprehensive publications on the medical management of radiation accidents. The purpose of this text is to provide the reader with information regarding the nature, number, and current medical management of radiation accidents.
This is intended for persons with some previous background knowledge such as physicians, health physicists, or radiation safety officers. Basic concepts and historical aspects including the accidents at Chernobyl and Goiania are covered in the first several chapters. Special aspects related to reactor, transportation, and military accidents are covered next. Specific management of acute problems such as whole-body irradiation, internal and external contamination, skin decontamination, and wound management are discussed in separate chapters.
Logistical aspects of emergency room management, instrumentation, and dose estimation are also covered. The last several chapters deal with long-term followup, carcinogenic risk estimation, studies of the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl reactor accidents, and legal issues. There is a glossary and a number of useful appendices with sample hospital procedures, suggested supply lists, emergency phone numbers, and tables with physical data related to dose estimation.
