Nov 25, April rated it really liked it. A new steampunk mystery novel, the author takes into a world many years ago.
Murder, mystery and clues that go completely away from what you expect. Almost reads like a Sherlock Holmes novel. The ignorant women of that time were anything but and very intriguing. I really did like the way this book unfolded and could actually see it happen as I read. Slightly graphic but in general a very good read.

Michael Coorlim is a teller of strange stories for stranger people. He collects them, the oddballs. The mystics and fire-spinners, the sages and tricksters. He curates their tales, combines their elements and lets them rattle around inside his rock-tumbler skull until they gleam, then spills them loose onto the page for like-minded readers to enjoy. He writes fast-paced stories about real people in Michael Coorlim is a teller of strange stories for stranger people. Some whisper that he may, in fact, be a wizard. But former readers will be acquainted with the fact that Bartleby is now married to Aldora Fiske, so does she make an appearance? Of course she does And then Coorlim does what he always does, namely, put his characters in difficult situations. Difficult emotional situations, mind me.
In Coorlim's works, characters are not simply thrown into action scenes against clockwork automatons which they are, only not in this book or trying out strange galvanic contraptions which they do in this book: Because so far we only have got glimpses at many of the hidden aspects of the characters, and how their adventures keep making these resurface. This is possibly the aspect of Coorlim's writing I appreciate the most. Dreams of the Damned, however, has its flaws.
The greatest one, I think, is that I immediately guessed who the murderer was, and that part of the story was simply dedicated to waiting until the characters reached the same conclusions I did. Of course, it was a hunch, but in a sense, I was expecting a plot twist that never happened. One cannot have everything, I suppose. Still, Coorlim uses this part of the plot to introduce even more doubts and weaknesses into his characters, and I appreciate that.
As a short novel, Dreams of the Damned is read in a couple of days -or even just an afternoon if one has the time- and offers great fun together with clever character development. In short, once again a fine offering by Michael Coorlim. I am happy to find indie authors with such a powerful output. I got this book as a gift over the holidays, but did not have time to read it until just recently.
Michael has a wonderfully descriptive writing style and a way with words.
Just like other books by this author, you are drawn in to the story right away and find it hard to put the book down. If you like steampunk, or any fiction for that matter, and you haven't read any Coorlim yet, you'll want to put him high up on your list of author's to try, he's certainly one of my favorites. You won't be disappointed. A new steampunk mystery novel, the author takes into a world many years ago.
