In an interview with the Guardian last year, for example, Kristen Stewart said: Last year also saw the song Bad at Love, by the bisexual singer Halsey, hit No 5 on the Billboard hot chart. The song recounts various failed relationships with men and women. It treats relationships with both sexes with equal weight. Pop culture is important; it helps us define our identities. It makes us feel as if we belong.

It shifts cultural norms. But only someone who is ready for anything, who excludes nothing, not even the most enigmatical, will live the relation to another as something alive.

Helen choice of quote is cynical — chosen for what is appears to reveal and for whom it might attract rather than for a deep personal connection. Awkwardness leeches from the screen. Jessica is, to borrow a phrase from popular culture, just not that into it.

Act two is all about sex. Helen is at work complaining to her colleagues about the lack of bedroom action when Jessica calls her.

Her voice softens instantly. This is not eroticism but courtship. It is a matter of the heart and not the parts. Helen, however, would like things to be a little more parts-y and a little less hearts-y. The next set of scenes show the women building a profound friendship but still not getting any action.

In a series of protracted make-outs Jessica treats their intimacy like an evening class: Two weeks, she wonders? They are sexually mismatched and this will ultimately be their undoing.

Three months later, Jess is suffering from being in the closet and Helen is suffering from being out. The argument is spectacularly undermined by a terrible analogy:. This is not something you can try on and see if it fits, okay? It is absolutely never appropriate to use race as an analogy for anything. It very rarely fits and it always, always makes you look like a dick. This is air-punchingly marvellous. Of course, in this sugar-crusted, sunshiny world coming out is always met with hollers of approval from friends and strangers alike, and so it proves to be with Jessica.

The concerns voiced are all the right ones: Some have argued that Jessica is really just leading Helen on, but these scenes show a tenderness and togetherness that belies that theory. They move in together, blending their lives and their fishtanks and living, as Helen points out, as best friends.
